Episode Three Commentary
After three episodes, EA Gray’s web-cartoon, “Kung Fu Kintae†continues to prove it’s one of the most promising works of animation currently on the Internet. With its “Parappa the Rapper†inspired look, “Code Monkeys†and “South Park†type of humor and “Aqua Teen Hunger Force†length, the show would be a perfect fit on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim stable of animated sitcoms.
While the third episode wasn’t as strong as the first two, it continues to induce laughter through the best means possible: in as many different ways it can. With a new villain added to Kintae’s ever-growing rogues gallery, the show continues to get deeper and more polished as well. If that wasn’t enough, another awesome fight scene proves that Gray is able to get more out of his work than you’d think.
As a result, this show has a tremendous amount of upside. Truth be told, it’s quite possible we haven’t seen the best of it yet.
Aside from references to porn star Lexington Steele, Final Fantasy VII, Dragonball Z and Star Wars in this episode, KFK in general spends a lot of time making fun of accents and cultural stereotypes, including those of Asian, Middle Eastern and even Bostonian persuasion. The end result is a show that, much like “South Park,†makes sure no one is safe.
Add in that and a level of weirdness and ingenuity unlike any other work of animation [the scene where Chucky Chan is on the toilet bowl is proof positive of this] and KFK continues to prove it’s a worthy and lovely way to kill some time.
Toilet humor doesn’t usually come this witty and polished.
Simply put, if you grew up with anime, Star Wars, late-night cartoons and video games in your life, this show is for you. Gray makes no effort to hide from his geeky roots and has crafted a work that takes the best from all of his cultural and artistic influences.
