There are a handful of solid free full games on the iPad, but “Run, Run, Chicken†is easily one of the most engaging and fun.
With simple gameplay and a host of unlockables as well, it’s a must-own for any iPad owner looking for a distraction. On the other hand, gamers who think the iPad isn’t up to the task of delivering interesting titles may have to rethink that statement after they check this game out.
But don’t get too far ahead of yourself just yet. While this title is solid, it doesn’t break any molds. It simply works well within the confines of the iPad.
Straight-forward gameplay is what drives this title, as one press of your right finger controls your jumps. The longer you hold the button, the farther your chicken will jump. After a few levels, you’ll earn a speed-burst, which is controlled by your left finger. At first glance, the simple, side-scrolling and jumping doesn’t seem too entertaining, but after the initial few levels, the game’s difficulty steps up a notch and it’s not a simple adventure anymore. With short jumps mixed in with long jumps and the appearance of power-ups, the game’s action gets spicy.
Is it a one of a kind gameplay experience? Not exactly, but it’s a title that makes the most of the iPad’s capabilities. Sometimes, technically proficiency alone makes up for a lack of originality and innovation. Graphically, the colors are vibrant and while the backgrounds themselves aren’t spectacular, with noticeable jagged edges and blur, they get the job done.
Add in different costumes and the promise of additional content and there aren’t many free titles on the iPad with so much to do.
Because of this, in spite of some of its small faults, the game’s tried and true controls and free price tag are its best selling point. It’s not a game of the year candidate, but it’s impossible to ignore the old school ride “Run, Run, Chicken†is able to provide.
