MTV and wrestling share an interesting relationship.
In 2007, MTV aired the hardcore, over-the-top “Wrestling Society X,†where guys like X-Pac and Vampiro got their time to shine in the spotlight.
It didn’t last though.
Perhaps too edgy for its own good (for the MTV audience anyway), WSX was canceled mid-season and never saw the light of day again.
Last year, “Lucha Libre USA†made its arrival, and MTV might have something special in their hands.
LLUSA airs every Saturday at 10 AM on MTV2 and boasts an aggressive, in-your-face product focused primarily on high-flying “lucha libreâ€-styled matches, six-sided ring and all. It offers something different if you are turned off by WWE’s over-the-top drama or TNA’s lack of storyline logic.
The odd pairing of Stevie Richards and Kevin Kelly provide commentary, but they do a great job of keeping the viewer informed. yet interested.
LLUSA has slowly been catching fire in the wrestling world with impressive, action-packed shows, and it was no different this week.
Matches:
Petey Williams vs. Charly Malice: Williams- defending the honor of top heel stable “The Right†(whom also includes LLUSA Champion RJ Brewer and Lizzy Valentine) takes on Charly Malice. The two mesh well in the ring, as the match was chock full of back-and-forth action with plenty of technical-styled counters. The match came to a finish as Valentine distracted the referee while Brewer attacked Malice and set up Williams to hit his Destroyer finisher, which put Malice out for good.
Magno vs. “Firewall” Jon Rekon: Brewer provided a challenge to Magno to face a member of The Right. Magno thought he was facing either Williams, Brewer, or Valentine, but Brewer threw Magno a curveball and introduced The Right’s newest member/bodyguard- “Firewall†Jon Rekon. With a strong, muscular build, Rekon has definitely got the look of a big man and plays the role well. Think Brodus Clay in WWE. Rekon showcased his abilities several times in the match, as he sent Magno flying across the ring with every kickout and dominated Magno with overpowering maneuvers. Magno did show a little fight, but it was to no avail as he was simply overmatched by the big man as Rekon stepped on Magno to collect the 3-count. Valentine, Brewer and Williams joined in on the attack and attempted to unmask Magno as Rocky Romero/Shane Helms showed up to make the save, but in a 3-on-2 situation, The Right got the better of them and stood unstoppable.
Rudismo vs. Treachery vs. P.R. Powers: In the triple threat main event for the tag titles, the action here was non-stop. Lizmark Jr. came out with a huge cape on and had a front row seat to the action. Only thing he was missing was someone feeding him grapes. All three teams showed off what they could do, with plenty of impressive double-team moves. Marco Corleone/Rocky Romero came out and attacked Lizmark Jr. and carried him up the ramp while the referee was accidentally knocked out. Masked men emerged and attacked Rellik and San Juan and Rudisimo took advantage and scored the pinfall and were crowned new Tag Champs.
Final thoughts: This episode was all about getting The Right over and it was mission accomplished. They are looking stronger than ever, as Brewer continues to be gold on the mic, Williams provides a good back-up as the group’s high-flyer, Valentine is a great valet and Rekon showed what he’s capable of. Their goal in LLUSA is perfect: unmask all Luchadors and “Americanize†the product. Simply genius. Other guys like Magno and Charly Malice also continue to get pushed and as long as LLUSA continues to provide lengthy, action-filled matches with simple, logical storylines, it shouldn’t suffer the same fate as WSX.
