Movies of the New York Film Festival: What to See

The 49th New York Film Festival will take over the city Friday, lasting for 17 days.

The organizers are bringing in films with buzz, like Martha Macy May Marlene starring Elizabeth Olsen, but for the most part they are steering clear of films that are too main stream.

They will screen films that are relevant to society, like Lost Boys 3: Purgatory, which is the final film in the trilogy about the West Memphis Three.

The festival will be showing many films the general public has most likely never heard of, but that feature big names, such as Martin Scorsese’s George Harrison: Living in the Material World. Scorsese gives an enlightened look at The Beatles lead guitarist’s personal life. The film will screen on October 4.

Films that the committee feels have impacted society will be shown throughout the festival as well. The 11-time Oscar-winning Ben Hur will be shown on October 1. The NYFF is also honoring the 10th anniversary of The Royal Tenenbaums on October 13 and the 25th anniversary of Castle in the Sky.

Productions with very well-known names will open and close this year’s festival.

Roman Polanski’s Carnage opens Friday evening, starring three Oscar winners and one of the most diverse character actors of today—Kate Winslet, Jodie Foster, Christoph Waltz and John C. Reilly. The film is based on the Broadway play, God of Carnage.

The Descendents will close the festival on Sunday, October 16. Alexander Payne’s film about a family’s relationships stars George Clooney, Judy Greer and Shailene Woodley.
