A cel-shaded, side scrolling shooter with RPG elements and a post-apocalyptic look, that is powered by a hilarious story.
A bunch of robots killed your cat.
You want revenge.
Enough said.
“Shoot Many Robots,†Demiurge Studios’ newest offering, set for a release later this year on the 360 Live Arcade and Playstation Network, is a fast-paced, action RPG romp with tons of flair and even more polish. Not since “Castle Crashers†has there been a title to offer such a deep, yet insanely addicting action-RPG experience.
While the game is still in development, as the demo shown at the New York Comic Con this year was still in production, it’s easy to see the beginnings of a wonderful game.
The gameplay mechanics are smooth, with no visible slowdown when multiple enemies flood the screen. Part “Mega Man,†another part “Contra,†this is a title that will cater to old-school gamers as well as those that enjoyed “Castle Crashers.†With a level-up system to boot, there’s incentive behind the reckless shooting.
The four-player online multiplayer is a huge bonus, as the game is best played with as many people as possible. Demiurge Studios promises a simple online experience, which makes it easy to join up with friends and strangers alike and get the action going.
The control is smooth, with one button for jumping, one for firing your weapon and another for a special weapon. Lock-on features work well and make it easy to take out the hordes of robots that come your way.
The amount of weapons, which range from a cat-carrying case that drops mines, to high-powered machine guns, are a blast. Not many games offer this much weapon diversity, especially in a DLC. It’s a worthwhile endeavor to check them all out. The type of armor is intriguing as well, and range from tiny bat wings, to paper bags, all have their own special abilities, which make the game incredibly customizable.
The look of the game however, is its biggest selling point. Not many games are cel-shaded anymore and with the Post-Apocalyptic story and “Borderlandsâ€-inspired look, “Shoot Many Robots†is instantly pleasing to the eye. Washed-out colors and a gritty look are a perfect fit for the insanity this game induces. While it’s fair to say that the gameplay is so strong that the look might not matter, the situation here is that the look of “Shoot Many Robots†will automatically draw in the huge crowd of “Borderlands†and “Fallout†fans looking for a new fix.
With this kind of built in audience, not to mention the word of mouth that starts once this game is released, we’re expecting very big things.
And thanks to mines falling out of kitty carriers, some rather large explosions.
