Ladies and gentlemen, the Star Wars universe has just gotten bigger. “Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi: Your Guide to the Dawn of the Jedi Era of Star Wars†is a nice place to start if you want to know about the Jedi origins.
Firstly, this is not a regular comic. There is no story. Instead it’s a companion to the series in comic book form that shows the world this takes place. Here we see the planet where the Jedi started, the various buildings they used and background on some important characters.
The best thing about this companion is that the artwork for the buildings is just awesome. Jan Duursema has a knack for making gorgeous full color backgrounds and buildings. His ship designs are really good, too. The best ship design is the Cloud Chaser. In fact, these should be blown up, framed and hanged on the wall of any Star Wars fan worth his salt. They are that good.
The same cannot be said about the character designs. They are not bad, it’s just that they look like every other Star Wars artwork we have seen a million times before. It’s too bad because Duursema has some great talent.
The information itself is interesting too. The comic does a good job of explaining various landmarks, how the Jedi order was back then, and even the history of the Sith. Not the Sith we know today; it’s the race of Sith that would later become extinct. This comic gives us a glimpse of what they look like. It’s too bad that it doesn’t tell us more about them.
The big question is, “does this mess up the Jedi mythology the same way the new trilogy did?’ No, it does not. In fact, this helps with the mythology and stays truer to what the old trilogy told us about the Jedi. No midichlorian mumbo jumbo to be seen anywhere.
“Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi: Your Guide to the Dawn of the Jedi Era of Star Wars†is a good resource comic not just for those interested in the Dawn of the Jedi era, but for all Star Wars fans. This is one the best Star Wars things to come out in recent years.
