The Immortal: Demon in the Blood #3: The Yokohama Ripper Review: Almost Over

Things are finally winding down and getting better in issue three of “The Immortal: Demon in the Blood” titled “The Yokohama Ripper.”

Enma is now living is Yokohama and there’s a Jack the Ripper style murderer on the loose. One of the victims is one Enma’s former clients: a “lady of the night” named Chie. Once again the story isn’t well-written at all. Enma is accused of murder because he was the last person to see her alive. Not much else to go on, huh? Plus it’s obvious who the Ripper is from the very beginning. There’s no tension and when the big reveal comes it loses whatever punch it meant to have. We don’t even see any of the murders. It’s all rushed.

At least the big action scene at the end was worth watching, despite it being short and having the usual bad lines sprouting out from the characters mouths. If anyone is wondering, yes, it does look like a fight scene in “Dragonball Z” with big explosions, characters glowing and all.

The art work is still the only good thing about this comic. The anime art still stands out and even when it’s dark out the shading is very well done. The art during the fight scene is well choreographed with all the different colors blending in with each other to give a sense of one big epic battle. You can even feel the heat coming out from the fire in the in building and the explosion on the last page will leave your eyes out of your sockets for a long time.

We do get to see another demon in this issue and if you want a demon to put as a background here you go. He’s big, scary, evil and just plain awesome looking.

“The Immortal: Demon in the Blood” is thankfully almost at an end. The third issue wasn’t good until the battle at the end due to a weak story that’s rushed. At least the art is still great to look at. The fourth and final issue will be a make or break for this series. That final battle will be something epic and unforgettable.
