‘Zombie Shooter’ Review: Mindless Slaughter

There’s something to be said about not judging a book by its cover. In this case it should be about to not judge a game by its poorly thought of title. Though it lacks creativity in the name department, “Zombie Shooter” by Sigma Team Inc, plays it forward with the title and tells you upfront what it’s all about. With an isometric view this title satisfied with its mindless zombie slaughter and minor RPG aspects.

Enemies range from your basic slow zombie to your mutants with cannons. The harder zombies actually require a little effort to kill and will rip you to shreds if you carelessly try to face a horde of them in the open. Players have to use corners and doorways or will find themselves soon overwhelmed.

This title is a shooter at heart but it gives players some options with their character builds. There are five different stats you’re able to increase after you level-up that govern different things such as health or speed.

Aside from stats there are also of course guns that you’re able to buy and upgrade with the money you find in each level. Gun modification is basic and allows you to upgrade each weapon three times. The higher you upgrade a gun, the faster the fire rate and the higher the damage. There are also hidden gun upgrades in levels that let you save money for other things like body armor, extra lives or your only friend in this game, a temporary defense drone.

There are nine guns total that range from your basic pistols to the advanced magma mini-gun. Throughout the game you’ll make enough money to buy most of the guns but wont be able to afford to upgrade them all.

Character creation is very basic, you choose either male or female. There are slight stat differences but not enough to change the game.

There’s not much story to be had in this game . If you bought a game called “Zombie Shooter” for the storyline, you should have known what to expect. The story is conveyed through text in your character upgrade screen.

The graphics are reminiscent of “Fallout II” and certainly look dated but it adds to the gritty feel of this zombie game. Though many are used to the high polished graphics of today, this was not an issue that affected game-play enjoyment.

There were some issues with the game such as enemies behind walls and your character getting stuck on scenery. Also zombies, which are supposed to be slow-witted have poor AI and sometimes spun in circles while stuck on a wall for no reason.

“Zombie Shooter” is a short game that takes about two hours to complete the campaign on normal. There is a survival mode and a “Gun Stand” mode that lets you take control of a turret and lets you lay waste to the undead hordes that surround you. These modes add some life to this otherwise short-lived game.

If you’re a fan of zombie games or shooter games you might be able to overlook the small problems of this game for $4.99.
