Our Ten Best: Movie Cars

Cars, what would we do without them? Besides the obvious job of getting the Regular Joe from place to place, cars are fun. They enable us to pick up and go somewhere miles away whenever we want. They’re fun to watch go in circles around tracks making loud noises, and they make movie action scenes fast and furious (pun intended). Here’s our list of the Top Ten Car Icons – the asphalt celebrities.

10: DeLorean DMC – 12: When Doc Brown dropped a flux capacitor inside of the DeLorean in Back to the Future, it stopped being a car, and became a legend. Today, the DMC-12 DeLorean from Back to the Future has been the frequently remade by car aficionados.

9: Ford Mustang Series: If Americans had to put an automobile on the United States flag, the Ford Mustang would probably be it. Loved by convertible-crazy women, nostalgic older men, and horsepower-happy teenage boys, the Mustang has remained a steady favorite for drivers of all types. Earning itself a place in movie history with Bullit and Gone in 60 Seconds, it was more recently used in the generally well-received movie Drive.

8: The New Chevrolet Camaro: The Camaro, sibling rival of the Ford Mustang. Also, due to Transformers, it’s now one of the most popular and well known Chevrolet automobiles in recent memory. Just don’t call it “The Bumblebee Car”. Whether you’re Lebron James or the average pedestrian driver, Chevrolet has managed to make a car that appeals to the upper crust and the working class.

7:Ferrari Enzo: You do not pick the Ferrari. Ferrari picks you. Ferrari, reportedly upon creating this legendary car, did not simply sell the cars to the highest bidder, but sent out letters to those who’d owned the previous incarnations of their cars (namely, the F40 and F50) and held interviews in order to declare prospective buyers fit for ownership. Obviously, it didn’t work that well, seeing as how several Enzo Ferrari wound up wrapping themselves around telephone poles.

6: Ford GT40: If Ford’s foray into Le Mans in the 60s showed European car companies one thing, it was that Ford could keep up with the big boys, at least for a little while. A four-time consecutive winner of Le Mans, the Ford GT40 briefly served successfully as America’s 40-inch tall road warrior.

5: Dodge Charger Series: Mention the Dodge Charger and most people will think you’re talking about the new Dodge Charger. But the history of the Charger has traveled a long way. Know that orange car from the Dukes of Hazzard? Yeah, that’s one of them. More recently, the Charger has been used in the latest Fast and the Furious movie, just as loud and mean as ever. Luckily, they didn’t transfer over the corny horn toot from Hazzard County.

4: Bugatti Veyron: What’s to say about the Veyron that hasn’t been said already? Bugatti’s Eight miles to the gallon city, 253 mile-per-hour monster hasn’t won any awards from the environmentalists – quite the opposite actually, having earned itself an award in 2010 as the car with the worst fuel efficiency street legal in the US. But who cares? It’s a Bugatti Veyron.

3: Mini Cooper: Seriously, don’t pretend you don’t know what car this is. Much like the Volkswagen Beetle, the Mini Cooper hasn’t changed much over the past 50 years – but the Mini Cooper popularity has increased dramatically since the release of the movie The Italian Job in 2003.

2: Chevrolet Corvette: If there ever was an equivalent to the European supercar, this is the American sports car tasked with the job of answering the call to battle against the Ferraris and the Lamborghinis of the car realm – only at a quarter of the cost. Whether it’s racing at Le Mans or the local drag strip, one thing is for sure. For the price, the Corvette doesn’t seem to disappoint.

1: Volkswagen Beetle: Who doesn’t know a Beetle as soon as they see it? The Beetle has lived a long life at around 50 years, never changing very much stylistically over that span. This little VW is famous for playing the starring role as Herbie in the 1968 movie The Love Bug and more recently, 2005’s Herbie, Fully Loaded.
