For the contest, which ran through mid-July on the site, readers were asked to write about a game they’ve been addicted to at some point in their lives. During the competition, we received nearly three dozen entries-here are the finalists:

“As a 40th birthday present for me, my wife suggested we take a trip to Las Vegas — not to hit the casinos, but to visit the Pinball Hall of Fame and Museum. I played quite a bit of pinball in my youth but later lost interest as arcades closed and well-maintained machines became rare.

Needless to say, I had a blast. I played machines I hadn’t seen in 25 years and experienced many of the great 1990s tables for the first time. Four hours after arriving, I left with a grin on my face and very sore forearm muscles. Who knew that pushing flipper buttons could be such a workout?

A few weeks after that trip, FarSight Studios released The Pinball Arcade. Before visiting Vegas, the game wasn’t anywhere on my radar; afterwards, I couldn’t wait for the release date. Realistic emulation of top-rated tables? Yes, please! I’ve been addicted to it ever since, and it’s rekindled my love for the silver ball. I’ve studied the pinball.org videos to raise my scores, and it has improved my playing skills on real-world machines. I’ve even found myself searching Craigslist for classic tables. Too bad I can’t afford one… yet.

“Metal Gear: Solid” stole my 13th birthday away with it’s amazing cut-scenes, but it’s story changed my life forever. At first I didn’t dig that I had to wait for things to happen, but after a while, it became a book that I could control, kind-of. The remakes on various systems have all found their way into my collection and my heart. Even though their isn’t anything new added, it’s like revisiting an old friend- that I will talk to for hours on end.”

“Even though I’m nearing 50, I still remember how “Toe Jam and Earl” allowed me to seem cool in front of my friends. I knew where all the secrets were and with a large pie and six pack and of course, the game in hand, my friends and I could always have a blast. My Genesis still works and while I haven’t played it in years, I remember how for months, it was the only thing I played.”

“OMG Parappa the Rapper! The songs were the soundtrack of my teenage years. No one knew what the hell I was singing. They just thought I was weird. Hell, maybe I was. The sequels never resonated the same way with me, but for that one summer, that game was at the center of cool.”

“In life, we all have our addictions. Some maybe for the cause of death and others are just the cause of getting you lost-literally. Temple Run is an addicting game from the App store of iTunes. It revolves on a curious explorer who attempts to steal an idol from a temple and being chased by “demonic monkeys.I had plans with a friend of mine to go to Central Park a few months ago, but the game ruined them them. Before leaving, I made a phone call to my home girl, and told her I would meet her there. Knowing it takes about 45 minutes from my location, it wouldn’t hurt to take my iPod touch and play a game to keep me busy. I was of course, playing Temple Run. The addiction to jumping off bridges gets to me. I already made a decision to get the high score. I didn’t even bother on looking at the display to where I was because it the game just took over.

Soon after, I lost again and it looked like I wasn’t leaving my seat on the train. I’m jumping off these bridge gaps over and over. I knew I had a place to go and someone to meet, but I couldn’t control myself from the game. It was just overpowering my very move and even I tried to put it down for one minute, it would’ve affected me deeply because I knew I was on a mission and it had to be completed.

Draw Something kills my phone; I have to carry my charger every where I go. I’m so addicted to this game, I end up playing during my classes and I pay zero attention. I have to ask someone in my class to let me borrow their notes. I also play on my break. I end up forgetting about the time and get to my next class late. I play on the subway where I also loose track of time. If no one plays me right away, I press the nudge button until they play me back. This game has changed my life. I learned to draw better on my phone.
