Hell’s Kitchen Coverage: Southern Comfort

Head south of the Mason-Dixon and rustle up some not so Southern comfort food in this episode of Hell’s Kitchen.

Kimmie was in tears after Tiffany was eliminated. She was her best friend in the competition and she feels she didn’t deserve to be eliminated.

The next day Ramsey had a map of the U.S. hanging the kitchen showing each region’s specialty cuisine. Ramsey said their next challenge is all about Southern cuisine. And to drive home that point he had a gospel choir behind the map that sang “This Little Light of Mine.” Kimmie was really getting into it.

The day’s challenge was to reinvent a classic Southern dish. The chefs went against each other in pairs. The dishes were chosen by each chef, one on the Blue and Red, by choosing a fan that was held by a member of the choir. It was Barbie VS Clemenza (catfish and collard greens), Brian VS Kimmie (pork chop and grits), Christina vs. Justin (fried chicken and mac and cheese) and Dana vs. Robyn (meat loaf and sweet potato).

The day’s special judge was Editor-in-Chief of Epicurious.com Tanya Steel. The Red Team easily won this competition 3-1. Justin was the only Blue member to get a point. Brian’s raw pork chop and Robyn’s overuse of salt cost the Blue.

The Red’s reward was Dana’s meatloaf dish appearing on Epicurious.com, a photo shoot and lunch at the Four Seasons at Beverly Hills. The Blue had to prep both kitchens, make bread and churn butter. Everyone on the Blue said they feel Amish.

At dinner service things went south in more ways than one. It was a Southern menu done fine dining and you’d expect Kimmie, being Southern girl, to shine here.

The biggest problem Kimmie had throughout service was catfish. She constantly burned the catfish and, at the end, she made one raw. She even got some oil in her face. That caused Ramsey to throw out the entire Red Team. Pity, they had a great start.

The Blue Team, as has become a tradition in these past episodes, was a mess. Robyn constantly made raw fried chicken, Brian made fried oysters that looked like “a ball of snot” and he cooked a catfish black on one side, brown on the other. Ramsey even had him taste it and he said “it tastes like fish.” Ramsey threw him out. James stopped Brian and told him that Ramsey that’s how Ramsey tests his chefs and to go back in there. They got thrown out after Robyn brings up another raw fried chicken.

Ramsey and Sous Chef Scott finished service for both kitchens.

At elimination The Red team chose Kimmie and the Blue chose Robyn. Kimmie got eliminated.

These have got to be the worst bunch of chefs Hell’s Kitchen has ever gotten, especially the Blue Team. The Blue Team has not finished a dinner service in a long time. Kimmie saying Barbie needed to go home was unwarranted; she has only made one mistake the entire night. Looks like everyone who hates Barbie is gone and Ramsey has taken the gloves off.
