Greetings from Tromaville! Troma Entertainment is proud to announce a reunion screening of cult hit Tromeo & Juliet at New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles on September 30 at 7:30pm. The film’s director, President of Troma and creator of The Toxic Avenger Lloyd Kaufman and writer/associate director James Gunn will host this “Troma green” carpet event. Editor Frank Reynolds, cast members Will Keenan (Tromeo), Sean Gunn (Sammy Capulet, also known for his long-running role as Kirk on Gilmore Girls), Valentine Miele (Murray Martini) and Stephen Blackehart (Benny Que) will also attend.
James Gunn is the writer and director of acclaimed horror comedy SLiTHER (from which he rightly edited out Lloyd Kaufman’s cameo performance), as well as SUPER (from which he should have cute out Lloyd Kaufman’s cameo performance) which stars Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page and Kevin Bacon. He also wrote the re-imagined Dawn of the Dead. His video game, Lollipop Chainsaw, was recently released on PS3 and Xbox by Warner Interactive. He is currently writing and directing Marvel’s forthcoming space epic, Guardians of the Galaxy.
Released in 1997, Tromeo & Juliet played in theaters all over the world, including over a year of screenings in Los Angeles. The New York Times and other prestigious media reviewed the film quite favorably. Containing all the body-piercing, kinky sex, and car crashes that Shakespeare wanted but never had, the film follows Tromeo, Juliet and Lemmy of Mötörhead as they travel through Manhattan’s underground in search of climactic love, violence, and the American Way.
Established in 1974 by Yale friends Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz, Troma Entertainment is one of the longest-running independent movie studios in United States history, and one of the best-known names in the industry. World famous for movie classics like Kaufman’s The Toxic Avenger, Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead, Class of Nuke’em High, Mother’s Day and Tromeo and Juliet, Troma’s seminal films are now being remade as big budget mainstream productions by the likes of Brett Ratner, Richard Saperstein, Akiva Goldsman, and Steven Pink. Among today’s luminaries whose early work can be found in Troma’s 800+ film library are Trey Parker, Matt Stone, Jenna Fischer, Robert De Niro, Dustin Hoffman, Kevin Costner, Fergie, Vincent D’Onofrio, Samuel L. Jackson, James Gunn and Eli Roth. Visit Troma at www.troma.com, www.lloydkaufman.com, www.twitter.com/lloydkaufman, and www.tromapast.tumblr.com.
