WWE Main Event Coverage: All Filler No Killer

After watching the début episode of WWE Main Event, it’s obvious the WWE doesn’t need a new show, but ION TV has one.

Two matches and promo? That’s it?

No, about 25 minutes of commercials too.

Things started off well though with a Champion vs. Champion match. But don’t let that fool you. This show is all filler and no killer.

While the matchup between CM Punk and Sheamus was solid, The Miz on color commentary was a bit of a shocker. He was nothing special. He felt forced and lacked the charisma he has in the ring. TO make matters worse, play-by-play guy Michael Cole was off his game, too.

He called Sheamus Triple H after a high knee. His over explanation of each superstar also affirms that the WWE is hoping this show brings new fans to the fold. Good, because it won’t satisfy old ones.

Did Michael Cole have to explain what the Hart Family Dungeon was? Not if the show was watched by real fans of the show.

It’s a fair mistake to make, especially considering Mr. Levesque’s affinity for The Great White, but c’mon. WWE fans deserve better.

Here’s the bigger question: Why is a current performer doing color commentary? There’s no shortage of former wrestlers out there that would have been so much better than Miz. What about Kevin Nash? That would have interested.

Ah, interesting. The complete opposite of what this straight-ahead show is. Only super loyal WWE fans will enjoy the program, as a lack of story development hurts the good wrestling.

Like a house show, this is nothing to marvel about.

Matches:

WWE Champion CM Punk vs. World Heavyweight Champion Sheamus: A more than solid 20-minute or so match that was hurt by a pair of commercial breaks in-between. Both performers went through their signature offense. There were plenty of back and forths as both performers went “vintage” on one another. After Punk missed the GTS, Sheamus locked in the Texas Cloverleaf, but Punk got to the ropes. After he hit an Irish Curse backbreaker, Sheamus missed a Brogue Kick, which allowed Punk to drop toe-hold the World Champion into an exposed middle turnbuckle and cover Shreamus for the pin.

Tag Team Tournament: Zack Ryder and Santino Marella vs. Justin Gabriel and Tyson Kidd: Aside from the stiff kicks of Kidd, this match was relatively routine. Gabriel and Kidd worked well together, but Ryder and Marella were better. After a Broski Boot from Ryder and a Cobra from Santino, Kidd was pinned for the loss.
