The Answer! #1 Review: You Have Punctuation on your Face

“The Answer!” stars a mild-mannered librarian alongside what might be The Question’s long lost brother. We are given very little back story on either character, save what is necessary for the moment. This is a vast improvement over some première issues, which try to pile on detail after miniscule detail about the protagonist’s life before the story has even started rolling.

With “The Answer!”’s approach, we are not overwhelmed by intricacies and are allowed to take our time with the comic. That’s probably the best part of it all.

Set in a (compared to most comics) realistic world, we find Devin the librarian (no surname given at the moment) hard at work doing what she does best: being a glorious nerd. But this only comes after we are introduced to her standing on a ledge, mustering herself up to jump to the next rooftop, with encouragement from the not yet named “Answer,” whilst being purposed by armed thugs.

The preliminary character summaries are short and to the point. Devin is a highly intelligent and quizzical librarian, whose hobbies include Jeopardy, crosswords, visual puzzles, and long walks through the bookshelves. She is analytical, a bit detached, and happily settled in her life as a professional bookworm. The other major protagonist, “The Answer,” has even less to them at this point. Blunt, direct, and to the point, this is a character shrouded in delicious mystery. Hopefully their less superficial details are slowly revealed as the story progresses.

The artwork in this comic is simple and not out of the ordinary. This is not to say the artwork itself is mediocre by any means, but more that it is not of any unusual style. The lines are clean and sharp, the coloring full, and the designs are solid. This is not a comic for those looking for unique visuals, but for those who rely more so on dialogue and story.

Overall, this is a solid start. The next installment should continue the wit of its predecessor and give us a bit more insight into this mystery known only as…The Answer.
