Track Fix: Adler: Good to be Bad

The personal problems of Former Guns N Roses drummer Steven Adler are more than documented. They’re a part of pop culture lore, immortalized on the VH1 reality show “Celebrity Rehab.”

To see someone at such a weakened state is almost catastrophic for any future success. Because of his past mistakes, it’s easy to look past Adler’s amazing ability on the drums and judge. But after listening to “Good to be Bad,” off his new band’s album, “Back From the Dead,” you’ll know that Adler’s body has taken a beating over the last two decades, but his hands are just fine. He’s got no problem kicking a bass pedal either.

Fueled by Adler’s frenetic drum work, catchy vocals and strings that are never forgotten, Adler and his band mates churn out a modern metal winner.

As soon as the track starts, Adler is the guide on the drums. Lead guitarist Lonny Paul jumps in soon after with a quick, searing riff. Even before the vocals begin, the track has a presence. Paul said there were times during recording that Adler was “in the zone.” This song feels like one of those moments.

Jacob Bunton’s vocal work is awesome in this track too. He plays with his range throughout the song and makes the whole thing fun. Throw in a well-placed F-bomb and you’ve got a vocal performance you’ll remember.

This song is ultimately like a fantastic sandwich. Adler’s drums are the bread, the foundation, while Bunton’s vocals and Paul’s work on guitar are the meat and cheese. Johnny Martin’s solid supporting bass line is the gravy baby. By themselves, the work is intriguing, but is a musical tease. Together, they have something cooking.
