Lego Batman 2 Review: Fan Boy Delight

TT Games works together with Warner Bros. and DC comics to bring its fans another festival of destruction in “Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes.” You can’t help but to become obsessed with the ability to smash every brightly colored Lego block that stands in your way. Or the ones that don’t.

It has been eight years since the first Lego video game, “Lego Star Wars: The Video Game,” hit the shelves. Since then, TT Games has worked with Lucas Arts and Warner Bros. to put out around 15 Lego games, each equally addictive as the last.

As the title suggests, the main story follows Bruce Wayne and his alter ego, Batman. As the game progresses you unlock several other heroes including Superman, Green Lantern, and The Flash. But this is not what makes the game so great. It truly becomes fun after you beat the story. You not only unlock several heroes as the game goes along, but also their worst enemies to wreak havoc on the streets of Gotham.

“Lego Batman 2” is a great step away from the realistic style that seem to dominate the market these days. Everything is very bright and cartoony, designed to match the simple game play. The simplicity of the game does not take away from how delightful of an experience it is. There is something satisfying about the power to press only two different buttons, yet still possess the power to destroy the city of Gotham.

What makes this game stand out from the rest of TT Games’ Lego smash fests is it is their first game to feature actual voice acting. Up until “Lego Batman 2,” all of the Lego characters merely grunted and gestured comically. This does add to the serious nature a small bit, but the writers still tried to keep it as comical as possible. There are many hidden moments of robots that dance around to disco throughout the game.

This game will prove either as a completionist’s best dream or worst nightmare. To completely 100% the game, you are forced to switch between various characters to solve mini-puzzles scattered throughout Gotham City. This is only necessary if you wish to unlock every character in the game. Many are not worth it, but the final hero is a fan boy’s dream girl in Lego form. Each character offers their own set of powers to utilize in the completion of the various puzzles. You can switch between flight, super speed, electricity, or the amazing power of running around as Alfred the butler punching things.

You don’t have to do all of the puzzles and the challenges of course. After all, the majority of the fun comes from watching all of the Lego’s explode in fountains of mayhem. If you want every character, a bit of patience and a replay of the game is required.

If you are a comic book nerd, it’s so very much worth it.
