If the March 14th edition of Impact proved anything, it’s that the company does not have one viable “face.”
Sting and Kurt Angle are amazing talents, but their day in the sun is nearly over. Sting is close to the other side of 50 and Angle, although he can still work at a top level, is far from what he once was. Samoa Joe has suffered from terrible booking over the past two years. Eric Young has the talent in the ring and on the microphone but is continually passed over. Others the likes of James Storm, Magnus and Joseph Park all have talent, but cannot be the “Stopper” the company needs creatively.
Even former champion Jeff Hardy, as charismatic and talented as he is, cannot be the guy TNA needs right now.
They need their own kind of monster.
It’s sad that the Aces and Eights, a group that consists of former WWE washouts, mid-carders and one former world champion in Ken Anderson (who has been used terribly by the company) can take over. But like The Shield in WWE, their power of unity has worked for them. So well that there isn’t one face on the roster that can sway the momentum.
The era of the heel is in full swing in TNA.
TNA hasn’t helped themselves either. Away from their top heel faction, the company has way too many baddies. Former and current champions Kenny King, Christopher Daniels, Frank Kazarian, Robert Roode, Austin Aries- all heels. Hell, even the returning AJ Styles and the massive Matt Morgan, the two guys who could pose a legitimate threat to the group, are heels. Something’s got to give or else this whole angle is doomed.
When the nWo was on it’s last leg, WCW got another year and change out of the angle when Sting returned and took the group on. Although the Aces and Eights haven’t dominated TNA to that level yet, there’s been no one even close to being able to confronting them.
In order for this angle to be remembered, Bully Ray needs an equal- someone who brings the best out of him on the microphone and in the ring.
Unless the company has the intention of developing someone from OVW, there is no one on the roster that can currently do that.
