Hell’s Kitchen Coverage: Paint Balls and Fortune Cookies

Four chefs try to reclaim their jackets in this edition of Hell’s Kitchen.

When we last left off with the “To Be Continued,” Nedra, Mary, Dan and Ray were on the chopping block. Ramsay announced he would do something he’d never done in Hell’s Kitchen before- that was let chefs fight for their jackets.

The next day the chefs were greeted with your typical Chinese restaurant layout. The challenge was to use chopsticks to pick up fortune cookies containing ingredients and put them up on a wall to create six different typical Chinese dishes. Whoever gets the most points wins. As the chefs started the challenge and went the boards, the Chinese soldier statue came to life, scaring the living daylights out of everyone. Ramsay said that the small fortune cookies would be too easy; the fortune cookies used were those gigantic ones.

The six dishes were chow mein, spring rolls, dumplings, stir fry, fried rice and soup.

The Blue Team managed to accumulate a lot of ingredients, but the Red didn’t get that many. They were worried that might’ve been their downfall.

To judge the day’s challenge was world famous Chinese chef Martin Yan. They could not get a better judge than the one who made Chinese cooking fun. It was a close tie until the chow mein part. Anthony was worried that his chow mein was horrible but it managed to give the Blue their first win. About time, too.

Their reward was a surprise. That surprise was paintball. Translation: Gang up on Dan. Dan got bombarded by paintballs- he barely got a shot off.

As for the women they had to prep the kitchens which included making pot stickers. For a snack they were given a common East Asian delicacy: Balut egg. For the curious, the balut egg is a duck’s egg with a still born duckling inside. The usual reactions and lost lunches ensured.

At dinner service they had their very first VIP tables. The Blue had “Entourage” star Rex Lee and the Red had “So You Think You Can Dance” judge Adam Shankman. As usual, the chefs layed an egg when it came time to serve their VIP tables. That is, after the jacketless chefs get their jackets back.

For the Red Susan undercooked a lamb so she needed to finish it in the oven-and it met the floor when it came out. Other than that, Jessica had problems on the fish station. It first began because her and Susan weren’t communicating and after that it was all her. Ramsay even asked her if she thought this was a joke.

For the Blue Ray was behind on his table side dim sum which caused some appetizers to get cold and sent back. The only other complaint is that Barrett was behind of the fish. When he made halibut for an elderly woman he forgot to take off the parchment paper. It was obvious that this was Ramsay’s tipping point.

There was no winner. Both teams had to pick two chefs for elimination. Red chose Susan and Jessica and Blue chose Dan Ray. Jessica got the boot.

This was one of the better episodes this season. Even though not many mistakes happened, the VIP table and the parchment in the halibut were pretty bad. Next episode’s preview looks like Dan might finally reach his boiling point and leave the show. Seeing how everyone on the treats him, it is possible.
