The addition of Samoa Joe to the Main Event Mafia last week was certainly a surprise.
But what else is in store for the faction?
Considering TNA’s penchant for wild and unexpected booking, expect more wild additions to the faction in the near future.
With Joe, Sting and Kurt Angle in the group currently, it’s obvious that the company wants only former World Champions in the “elite” faction.
So the question is, what former champions are left in the company?
It’s easy to say that Abyss and Sting won’t join the group, as their wild card status is more enjoyable than having them pinned down in a faction. That leaves Austin Aries, Bobby Roode and possibly the long-forgotten Jeff Jarrett as potential members. With Aries the new X-Division champion, ready to cash in the title for an opportunity at the World title, the addition of Aries makes sense. Plus, the guy would be great in a suit, a modern day Tully Blanchard, oozing charisma and ring polish.
The same thing can be said for Roode, who, once upon a time was the longest reigning TNA champ. He, too, like Aries, could use a spruce up creatively. Sting and Angle’s “eyeing” of Roode backstage last week was a damn good hint that Roode will eventually find a home in the gang.
However, while Roode and Aries’ eventual arrival in the MEM are logical, one man’s addition to the group would be monumental and different enough to get some attention.
Jeff Hardy.
It would be like seeing Chris “Bird Man” Andersen in a suit.
Imagine the rebel with dark sunglasses and a decent haircut. The Hunter S. Thomspon of professional wrestling has always been his own man, but sees the power of conformity in order to eliminate the threat of the Aces and Eights. That would be cool.
Hell, if the rotund and mohawked Joe can join the group, why not Hardy? Not the youngster he used to be, it may be time for Hardy to start an image change. While he still sells merchandise and women love him, his biggest supporters look like worn-out Def Leppard fans. All the wrestling fans that grew up watching him are older and working. While hes a relic of the “Attitude” era, those days are over. A clean image and a push maybe the best thing for him in terms of extending his career. You can’t be the wild man forever, Hardy.
The return of the Main Event Mafia may give Hardy an opportunity he won’t have again.
