Summerslam 2013 Coverage: Orton New Champ, Best PPV of 2013

Well if you didn’t see that coming, then you’re an idiot.

That doesn’t mean it wasn’t a blast to watch though.

Randy Orton’s cashing in of his Money in the Bank briefcase after Daniel Bryan’s magical and clean win over John Cena at Summerslam was wonderfully executed. It also sets up an interesting, Orton vs. Bryan feud that will rekindle Orton’s fire and go another step in making sure Bryan, with Cena’s time off, stays the company’s top face.

Things just got very interesting.

Matches:

Pre-Show: United States Champion Dean Ambrose vs. Rob Van Dam: Both of these guys went at each other in a way that made it a travesty it was a free match. However, the rest of The Shield interrupted and soon enough, Mark Henry and The Big Show joined the party to give RVD the win via DQ. This possibly sets up a massive tag team encounter down the road.

Kane vs. Bray Wyatt w/The Buzzards: Kane simply beat the crap out of Wyatt. But three Chokeslams weren’t enough to put him away. Interference from the Buzzards and a Knox Out from Wyatt led to a win for the family.

Cody Rhodes vs. Damien Sandow: One of the best matches of the night. Rhodes broke out with some unique offense, including a Muscle Buster. After a ton of counters, Rhodes got the clean win with the Cross-Rhodes.

World Heavyweight Champion Alberto Del Rio vs. Christian: This was an epic. There were so many instances where it appeared that Christian would win the title, but powered by vicious kicks, Del Rio stayed in control. After 20 minutes of back and forth action, Del Rio won with Arm-Breaker.

Natalya Neidhart vs. Brie Bella: Nothing special here. Neidhart dominated the match and won with the Sharpshooter.

CM Punk vs. Brock Lesnar w/Paul Heyman: This had big fight atmosphere and certainly could be considered the match of the night. Between the stiff striking and submission counters, this felt like a MM match at times. However Lesnar wrestled his best match since his return, nailing a variety of suplexes and powerbombs on Punk. Even with Heyman’s involvement, Lesnar had trouble with the vigilant Punk, but not many people kick out of the F5, on a chair. Punk didn’t.

Dolph Ziggler and Kaitlyn vs. Big E. Langston and Divas Champion AJ Lee: Another match that wasn’t anything unique. Langston and Ziggler did the majority of the heavy lifting. After Kaitlyn nailed Lee with a Spear, Ziggler finished off Langston with the Zig-Zag.

WWE Champion John Cena vs. Daniel Bryan: Cena brought out the big guns here, hitting his old finisher the ProtoBomb and even flew off the top with the Sicilian Slice, but Bryan was amazing. In addition to his usual repertoire of kicks and submissions, he ended up gaining the win with a beautiful Shining Wizard.

After the confetti fell and Bryan shed a few tears however, Randy Orton felt it was time to hit the ring. With his Money in the Bank briefcase in hand, Bryan was ready to defend his newly acquired title. Triple H had other ideas. A Pedigree from the COO later and Orton was the new WWE Champion.
