Samsung Galaxy S4 Review: Good But Not Great

Apple‘s iPhone has been the top seller for a while now, but times have certainly changed as Android have more than caught up, especially Samsung with the release of its top selling flagship smartphone, The Galaxy S4. Not only is the Galaxy S4 the King of the Smart phone world right now, but it offers a ton of features and has a fantastic display which separates it from the competition.

What makes the Samsung Galaxy S4 an attractive smart phone is not its exterior, but its interior, which sports a ton of features such as smart scroll, which causes you to read a webpage by scrolling up and down with your eyes, and Smart Watch, which allows a video to pause while looking away from the screen. Obviously, when you stare at the screen again, the video resumes. It’s got to be seen to be believed.

Another feature on the GS4 is Air view, which allows you to scroll over text from a webpage or email without touching the screen. While popular on the previous generation galaxy S3, the S voice is still a feature on the Gs4 that allows you to talk to your phone about things such as a sports score, a weather update, etc.

The display of the Galaxy S4 is one of the phones strong suits. It has a 5-inch HD screen. Watching movies and videos can be really fun while using features such as smart pause. What is great about this phone is that there is so much you can do with it when it comes to features. Another positive feature on this phone that has consumers excited is the 13 megapixel camera, which also sports a ton of features such as Best face, Drama Shot, and many more. It is easy to say that the camera on this phone is its main strength and main reason for it being a top seller.

The down side to this smart phone is the build quality. For a consumer driven phone, its plastic look and touch feels very cheap in the hand, unlike the iPhone which feels sturdy in spite of its light weight. The GS4 is also very slippery and has a good chance to fall out of your hands if you do not have a protective case over it. This is due to its glossy and plastic feel.

Although the GS4 has many cool features, the ones they advertise do not live up to the hype. The concept of looking away at a screen while the video pauses can be convenient for some, but for many can become an annoyance. These features do tend to cause the phone a bit of lag.

While the advertisements for the GS4 try desperately to sell the cool features, they will only be useful for a short amount of time, because let’s be honest, attempting to look away from you screen while watching a video, and moving your head up and down to read on the phone can be straining on your neck, and more importantly it makes you look a bit ridiculous.

Overall, the GS4 is a solid smart phone that you can do so many things with. The only problem is will you use the features on a consistent basis? In a consumer driven lifestyle where our smartphones are practically our life, the GS4 is good, but not great.

I grew up in Bensonhurst Brooklyn, the same neighborhood many of the best mafia films of our day were based on, idolizing guys like Robert Deniro, Martin Scorsese and Al Pacino. I'm also a big sports fan and follow the New York Yankees immensely.
