AJ Styles’ refusal to join the Main Event Mafia and Austin Aries dismissal to unite with the new faction of Christopher Daniels, Frank Kazarian and Bobby Roode a few weeks ago on Impact has to make you think.
Can TNA have two lone wolves? Both have cut solid promos over the last week weeks and voiced their opinions on the current state of their careers and the company. Both are pissed. Both want the TNA World Heavyweight Championship around their waists.
Like “The Highlander” however, there can be only one. Or can there be two?
What does TNA do here?
Chances are both will get singles pushes and when the time comes, one of them, more likely Aries, since Styles hasn’t been World Champ in forever, will join a faction. It’s predictable as hell, but that’s the creative mindset at TNA- expect the expected, or watch reruns of Nitro and emulate the worst possible storyline you can think of and put your own ant-sized stamp on it so it’s a little different.
It could be so much cooler to do something different for once.
And it would be easy.
Aries is at his best as the cocky, but honest and hard-working anti-hero. Styles is a super-straight-laced babyface who does his best talking in the ring. The same way the WWE pushed John Cena vs. CM Punk for so long, why can’t TNA do the same for Styles and Aries? Give Styles the title and have him tell the world that he’s the man in TNA and if someone wants that belt, come and get it. Give him a corny catchphrase, simplify his TV moveset a bit and let him give a kid his trademark gloves before every match.
Now, he’s extra babyface. Something Aries, who recently put his crotch in Christy Hemme’s face after she botched his introduction on Impact, will never be.
After Styles earns a few big wins over Roode, Bully Ray and even Jeff Hardy, you have Aries, who could also be on a tear, come down and tell Styles he’s never defended the title against “The Greatest Man in the World” yet.
Just like Cena and Punk, fans of Styles aren’t necessarily fans of Aries. Sure, the divide is not the canyon it is in the WWE, but with some competent booking and time for Aries to work on the mic, both Styles and Aries can show how different they are.
So there ya go. Two lone wolves.
