Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon Because I Don’t Know! Initial Thoughts

If you attended New York Comic Con this year, you should have noticed the weak presence of games available for a hands-on – with the exception of the Nintendo booth. Both Sony and Microsoft were MIA, taking out a big chunk of the NYCC gaming experience and leaving studios’ working on current-gen or Wii U projects to keep the presence alive.

With that said, out of the small percentage of game’s that were available, there was one that really stood out. One that we did not to expect to play half as long as we did. That, you may have already guessed since it’s the title of the article, is “Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon Because I Don’t Know!,” a four-player cooperative dungeon-crawler featuring a collection of fan-favorite characters from Cartoon Network’s hit show.

Trying to explain why this game is such a joy to play is almost impossible. The only way to really understand what makes this game so fun is to pick up the controller and see for yourself. But make sure you do so with at least one other player.

Seeing as how the game was so popular on the show floor we were never given the chance for a single-player playthrough, which is exactly what we hoped for. The real fun comes from sharing the experience with other players, creating different character combinations and working together as explore the dungeon for who knows what reason… get it? If you truly want this game to deliver, you will want to consider inviting a friend or two (or three) over.

The gameplay varies depending on which character you choose; each are equipped with different attacks, specials and health. Also, some characters can fly or jump across gaps making it easier to get around whereas some must find a new path. It can get irritating at times, when only one member of your party forces you to take the long way because they can’t get over a hole in the ground, so it was unsurprising to see most players choose characters capable of flight.

All enemies and maps are all inspired from the show. Weapons, on the other hand are, are not, but fit right in with the cartoons humorous tone. Two examples of this are the cat gun, which, you guessed it, launches cats at your foes and the bread shooter that, well, shoots bread… okay, they could have gotten a little more creative with naming these items. Still, for the most part, the weapons are a great addition to the game and hearing the “meow” every time you shoot a cat gun never gets old.
