TNA Genesis Coverage: Bye Bye Sting

This week’s conclusion to Genesis was full of surprises. The exodus of Sting was just one of several key plot developments in one of the best episodes of Impact in quite some time.

Continuing the “unknown” investor story, it appears the entity is ready to take over TNA. As a result, Dixie Carter was petrified and had a lawyer in tow. The Lone Wolves (Eddie Edwards and Davey Richards) promised the identity of the “investor” would be revealed next week, so that should keep the intrigue alive for the time being. Can she keep control over her company? What is this “Genesis” the wolves have referred to? How will it affect the company?

With a lack of filler and solid matches throughout the card and plenty of storyline developments, the finale to Genesis is enough to keep your eyes on the company for another week.

Matches:

World Title Briefcase on a Pole: Gunner vs. James Storm: Naturally, it was a physical encounter, with plenty of high-impact offense. Storm was on top of his game and surprised the crowd with a top-rope Hurricanrana. Gunner then fought back with a top rope Electric Chair -type drop, which sent the briefcase flying. After a headbutt, Gunner got possession of the case.

Velvet in a Cage Match: TNA X-Division Champion Chris Sabin w/Velvet Skye vs. Austin Aries: Easily one of the best matches on the card as the two went through their signature strikes, counters and maneuvers. Before the match, it appeared Skye had an opportunity to help Sabin by bringing a weapon to the ring, but refusing to, she allowed Aries to garner the upper hand. After a few dropkicks and a Brainbuster, Aries reclaimed the X-Division title.

Steel Cage Match: Bobby Roode vs. Kurt Angle: This was a decent match until Angle went 2001 on the audience and performed- and missed- a Moonsault off the trop of the Steel Cage. Although this gave Roode an opportunity to win, Angle latched on the Ankle Lock and nearly won. After he escaped the submission, Roode hit the Roode Bomb, but Angle again persevered and kicked out. A series of moves later, Angle hit a top rope Angle Slam, but Roode kicked out. After a few more counters and strikes, Angle got to the top of the cage, but gave Roode an opportunity to crawl out himself. After the race, Angle ended up the victor and saving his opportunity to one day join the TNA Hall of Fame.

Samoa Joe vs. Rockstar Spud: Joe destroyed Spud with his trademark Muscle Buster and Choke.

TNA World Heavyweight Champion Magnus vs. Sting w/Samoa Joe: A pretty even match until Carter’s cronies The Bromans, Bad Influence, Ethan Carter III and Zema Ion beat on Sting and Joe. Angle eventually hit the ring and cleaned house, which allowed Sting to mount a comeback. After a Sting Superplex, Sting went for the cover but couldn’t earn the pinfall. After he missed the Splash, Sting knocked out the referee, but was able to lock in the Scorpion Death Lock. Although Magnus tapped out, there was no referee. That’s when Roode joined the match and beat on Sting. Magnus then hit the Michinoku Driver and thanks to Dixie Carter, who dragged out Earl Hebner to count the pinball, Sting’s career in TNA was over.
