The first Smackdown of 2014 had plenty of grappling goodness, even if it lacked much in terms of real storytelling. Overall, it was a nice way to catch up with the company if you missed this week’s RAW. Adding a handful of good matches as well 2014’s inaugural Smackdown got it done despite never “wowing†anyone.
Check out our Smackdown Power Rankings to see who got off to a great start in 2014 on the company’s B show.
5: R-Truth: A win is a win, even if it had more to do with Naomi, Cameron and Xavier Woods. Regardless, Truth has been winning far more matches than he’s lost as of late and with the continued angle with Brodus Clay, Truth- and the young Xavier, will continue to fuel the mid-card with a decent combination of fun and solid wrestling.
4: Big E. Langston: WWE Smackdown Power Rankings: Not Bad, for a B Show One of the company’s biggest young stars, Langston decimated former IC Champion Curtis Axel. At this point, you have to think, when is this guy going to get a real angle?
3: The Wyatt Family: From the Gator Roll to the bevy of strikes, both Erik Rowan and Luke Harper had a fantastic match with the WWE Tag Team Champions Cody Rhodes and Goldust. Even without their leader in Bray Wyatt and new acquisition in former WWE and World Champion Daniel Bryan this week, the Family is still one of the best tag teams in the company.
2: The Shield: Win, or lose, Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins and the increasingly interesting Roman Reigns continue to make their presence felt. Simply put, this one one of the factions WWE creative has done right by. Whether they are in the ring with the Usos or matching wits with CM Punk on the mike, they are rarely out of place and always able to work from their strengths.
1: CM Punk: For a show that lacks real star power, Punk’s appearance this week certainly added an extra element. Tagging with Jimmy and Jey Uso against The Shield, Punk was his usual stellar self in a solid TV main event.
