Muppets Most Wanted Review: Adorable

It’s once again time to play the music and light the lights because “Muppets Most Wanted,” their latest slapstick fare, has the same charm, lighthearted touch and humor as the movies of old.

After their last movie, “The Muppets,” the gang figures that the next logical step is to make a sequel. There’s even a song and dance routine about it. This sequel is about Constantine, the “world’s most dangerous frog,” who looks like Kermit, except he has a mole and speaks with a Russian accent. He escapes from a Russian gulag, trades places with Kermit and, with the help of Dominic Badguy (Ricky Gervais), he steals priceless artifacts from museums around Europe while masquerading as Kermit. As for Kermit himself, he’s trying to deal with life in a gulag.

Yes, this movie is essentially “The Great Muppet Caper,” with every main character getting switched with a bad guy who looks exactly like him. The only difference here is that it is done with The Muppets usual comedic and lighthearted tone. Every scene is as funny and memorable as people expect it to be.

Many of the songs are super catchy. “We’re Doing a Sequel” starts the movie off with a bang and “Together Again” caps off the soundtrack nicely. One newer song worth mentioning is “Interrogation Song.” It’s a nice recitative where Sam the Eagle and Jean (Ty Burrell) interrogate each Muppet. The way it’s done is fast paced and downright hilarious.

“Something So Right” is an odd one. It starts off with Miss. Piggy singing solo. It starts off as the worst song in the movie. Then the other Muppets join in along with Celine Dion. It’s still not the best song in the movie, but that increased ensemble makes it listenable.

The celebrity cameos are mixed bag. Not counting Ricky Gervais and Tina Fey- who are main characters and do great jobs, the other celebrities just seem to be there just to have cameos. Others do an OK job when they appear, but not as exciting or memorable as in previous movies.

“Muppets Most Wanted” is one of the best Muppet movies to date. The story, while cliché, is performed wonderfully and full of laughs. The celebrity cameos may not be the best, but thee songs elevate this movie to stardom. Grab your banjo, your broken down tour bus and a whole bunch of friends and maybe some chickens and go see this movie.
