Review Fix chats with Barren Womb’s Tony Gonzahl, who discusses the band’s sound influences and new album, “The Sun’s Not Yellow, it’s Chicken.†With aspirations for a European and UK tour later this year, the band is ready to spread their sound all over the world.
Review Fix: What are your influences and how do they play a role in the band’s sound?
Tony Gonzahl: Everything we experience influences our music to some degree, be it family, friends, music, books, politics or any other input. When it comes to musical influences lately, we’ve been listening to a lot of Golden Age Hip Hop, older hardcore and post-punk, and Dark Americana.
Review Fix: What’s your favorite track on the album? Why?
Gonzahl: We love them all, but right now we’re really digging on the title track. It’s hella fun to play and the bridge on it turned out great.
Review Fix: “Will you be God’s art or Satan’s graffiti” is an awesome track, how was it written? Is there a story behind it?
Gonzahl: Thank you. The basic spark was lit when we stumbled upon the verse groove one day. Then we simply built the rest of the song around that. No big story behind it, we wrote it over a couple of beers at our rehearsal space.
Review Fix: What’s the band’s creative process like?
Gonzahl: Our songs usually start out as jams. When we arrive at something worthwhile we do a rough demo and, if it sounds good, flesh things out from there. It’s just an enjoyable and hassle free way of doing things.
Review Fix: What are the band’s goals for this year?
Gonzahl: We plan to tour quite a bit around Europe and the UK this year. Just try to get the word out there about the new record.
Review Fix: What do you think are standing in your way of accomplishing them?
Gonzahl: Since we still are mostly DIY, time is the one factor that is of issue. We are only two people after all.
