There’s been a ton of jibber jabber on the internet the past two weeks following Eric Young’s TNA title win. Some say it’s a cheap ploy by TNA to have their own Daniel Bryan, while others say it’s another attempt by TNA to create drama around a belt that loses value every day.
I say it’s a bit of both, but it makes more sense than ya think.
Away from Kurt Angle, Samoa Joe, Jeff Hardy and Austin Aries, Eric Young is easily the best all-around performer in the company. The guy can work a crowd on the mic and in the ring. But for reasons unknown, he never got a chance to run with the TNA title. Hell, even James Storm and Chris Sabin have held it, so why not EY? Showtime has bled just as much for TNA as both Sabin and Storm and he’s always been more entertaining. Even as a Knockouts Tag Team Champion with ODB, he put more asses in the seats than Sabin and Storm. Simply put, he’s a deserving TNA Champion.
While it may appear on the surface to someone who just watches WWE that he’s a Daniel Bryan clone, they are very different workers. Young is much stronger in the ring and can and will surprise you with just how much he can lift. While he won the TNA title with a Piledriver, his Wheelbarrow Neckbreaker is a nasty move that can pin anyone. Out of the ring, Young is hilarious. I once saw him run the bases and slide into each of them at a house show at MCU Park in Brooklyn a few years ago. He had the whole place laughing. Sure, Bryan is funny at times, but Young is hilarious.
And as far as the beard goes, only a WWE fanboy would bring that up. Any real wrestling fan knows that Young has been rocking the beard far longer.
For TNA to truly take advantage of what Young has to offer, EY has to take out Abyss, his biggest rival- and dominate. Nothing against the Monster’s Ball match last week on Impact, but EY needs more than a bite, counter and Elbow Drop. He needs to make a point. A Piledriver or a Wheelbarrow Neckbreaker- it doesn’t matter. And it needs to be clean. After that, Young needs to speak his mind and get the fans involved. It won’t be anything like the Yes movement; that’s a horse of another color. But it could still be a hell of a time.
