Anyone excited by the thought of the reformation of Evolution two weeks ago on RAW just doesn’t get it. This is anything but the same group that dominated the WWE a decade ago.
The original Evolution was a group spearheaded by Triple H and Ric Flair that not only saved Flair’s career, but also acted as a springboard for both Dave Batista and Randy Orton.
In 2014, Orton is practically a living legend, a few solid storylines away from being a first ballot WWE Hall of Famer, while Batista is a multi-time World and WWE champion with nothing to prove (well he was never a too-notch worker, but has enough within the sum of his parts to always be considered a top of the card performer). Triple H, in 2004, was already a household name and now he’s literally the King of Kings in the WWE.
So what does this version of Evolution have to prove this time around?
Not much. They’ve already proven individually that they can’t beat Daniel Bryan, so what’s the purpose of a reformation, other than to sell some merch?
To make life miserable for The Shield. Simply put, Evolution has evolved as much as humanly possible and with no youngsters to guide, they are merely a plot device at this point. A damn good one, but one nonetheless.
Ultimately, the success of Evolution’s reformation will have everything to do with how well Dean Ambrose, Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins are able to work with Triple H, Orton and Batista. Like Orton and Triple H have done their entire careers, Evolution will have to adapt in order to stay pertinent. If they can’t put The Shield over, the mission has been a gigantic failure- one that continues sidesteps for Orton and Batista and dims HHH’s starpower. All with clean losses to Bryan under their belts, they need to lose again to the younger and less established Shield, but need to do so with dignity and grit. Without it, these three lose a lot more than they came in with.
