Rai #1 Preview: Futuristic Japan Meets ‘Appleseed’

Valiant Comics  newest comics seems to be a futuristic Japanese story, “Rai” by fan favorites Matt Kindt and Clayton Crain, but the initial previews are underwhelming.

In one of Japan’s orbital colonies, sector 3999, in the year 4001, a folk hero named Rai is summoned by Japan’s leader father to investigate the first murder in 1,000 years. This murder forces Rai to confront Father and his own past.

The story sounds decent enough. It’s not groundbreaking or anything, but it can be something else of it goes in the proper direction. Rai at first doesn’t appear to an interesting character, but with the right development that may change. The dialogue also reads like it was written in a rush without any thought put into it. There’s no emotion to the lines. No intensity.

The art in the first six pages make this comic look like a western artist trying to combine western comics with manga. It looks a little weird and unsure of what it wants to be. It’s almost like “Appleseed,” but without the identity.

The preview of “Rai #1” makes the comic seem like it needs some work in order for people to care about it. The story sounds interesting but the preview makes it not, the art has no identity and the dialogue is lacking. It has possibilities of improvement, but that’s left to be seen in the final product.
