Review Fix chats with Boston singer/songwriter Ryan Aderréy about his recently released EP, “What If.†Aderréy also discusses his creative process, biggest influences and his favorite tracks on the album.

Review Fix: What have you learned about yourself through this album?
Ryan Aderréy: I’ve definitely learned that I’ve grown tremendously since I first started singing. That much I can say with absolute certainty. I’ve also learned that we have the power to be the voice for those who feel like they don’t have one. There’s something very empowering about that. Recently, we’ve had fans come up to us and tell us how much our music means to them and how it allowed them to push through a really hard time in their lives. To me, that’s the biggest compliment we can get as a band an it reminds us why we do what we do.
Review Fix: What is your creative process like?
Aderréy: In terms of song writing I don’t actually have a “process” to speak of. Sometimes I can be so inspired that I write seven songs in a week and other times I can’t write a single word for months. I prefer to see it as organized chaos that, one way or another, comes together to form the final product you hear. How it comes together is a mystery to even me at times.
Review Fix: Who inspires you musically?
Aderréy: I have many inspirations, some modern and some older but my two biggest ones are Fall Out Boy and Panic! At The Disco.
Review Fix: How was “A Miracle, My Love” written? Is there a story behind it?
Aderréy: “A Miracle, My Love” was written based on a personal life experience. It’s about feeling as if you have nothing to get out of bed for in the morning and then someone comes along who allows you to see the world in a new light. Because of this person you begin to see miracles in the smallest of things that you never used to give a second thought and in doing so, he or she becomes your miracle.
Review Fix: What’s your favorite track on the album, why?
Aderréy: My favorite track on the album is “Without Hope” because it’s a friend’s story that I witnessed first-hand. My friend grew up in an emotionally abusive household and still to this day struggles to get away from the situation. But no matter what, no matter how bad it seems or how bitter my friend can get at times, they never give up hope and I think this is a message that I needed to get out there. Never give up. No matter what, just…never give up.
Review Fix: What song on the album do you think people may skip through at first but is better when they listen a few times?
Aderréy: I think you could say this about every song on the album and I don’t mean that in a bad way. The fact of the matter is, we have countless influences and we have the ability to incorporate numerous styles into our creations so each song is very different from the one before it. Therefore I think it’s inevitable, depending on your taste, that you might gravitate to one song on the album more than another. But I guarantee the more you listen to the individual tracks, the more they’ll all grow on you.
Review Fix: What are your goals for the rest of the year?
Aderréy: For right now it’s all about performing as much as possible and building a large, organic fan base as well as expanding on our social media numbers.
Review Fix: How do you want this album to be remembered?
Aderréy: Quite simply, when everyone looks back we want this album to be remembered as the first of many great albums in our discography. We want the listeners to associate this album or a particular song on this album with an event they might have been going through when they first heard it. It’s that kind of connection to our fans we so desperately crave. It’s what drives us as a band.
