Review Fix chats with Benin City vocalist Joshua Idehen, who discusses the band’s new “Midnight Malarky†EP, as well as the band’s inspirations, influences and goals for the future. Aided by the up and coming UK Producer Kirk Spencer, the trio has plenty of potential to grow on the indie music scene in London.
Review Fix: How did you guys come together?
Joshua Idehen: I met Tom through a mutual friend. Tom knew Liam from other music projects. We jammed. It was fun.
Review Fix: How would you describe your sound?
Idehen: Electro Brass. Fun.
Review Fix: Who are your musical influences?
Idehen: Gnarls Barkley, Metronomy, Grizzly Bear. Fun.
Review Fix: How is the new EP different from your first LP?
Idehen: No Trombone. More Synth. More fun.
Review Fix: What have you learned through the creative process of this EP?
Idehen: Always spend at least a day recording drums and bass in a proper studio. Mixing is an art. Do not be afraid of upping the tempo. £1 pizzas are a good thing. Saxophones through an effects pedal can sound like screaming children. Deadlines are a lie. AHF (Always Have Fun.)
Review Fix: What was the create process behind “Bus”?
Idehen: I thought up a song. Tom expanded on it and built the bridge. Liam added drums. Portugal The Man sorted the chorus. Shanaz Dorsett made the bridge nice. Marc Pell produced. Rob the mixer mixed. It was fun.
Review Fix: How do you feel about your work being remixed?
Idehen: It’s nice. It’s like my song, but not my song. Like a cover but the person covering it forgot half the words and changed the melody. It’s fun.
Review Fix: What are your goals with the band for the short-term future?
Idehen: More gigs. More music. More fun.
