Review Fix chats with Soca singing sensation Marlon Webster about his recently released album, “Track Wreck†and his upcoming EP, “Rize,” as well as his transition from the sweet sounds of South American Soca to the pop genre in America. Also discussing his creative process and goals for the album, Webster gives us an inside look at his process and love of music.
Review Fix: For people who have never heard it in America, what is Soca music?
Marlon Webster: Soca music is a type of calypso music. It mixes elements of rap, reggae and dance music. It’s very upbeat and fun and keeps everyone moving.
Review Fix: Why do you think people in the states will enjoy your work?
Webster: I am upbeat and fun, just like my music. I can get people moving and they will have a good time listening to my music and enjoy seeing me perform.
Review Fix: Who did you listen to growing up? How did they influence your music?
Webster: I have always listened to many types of music. All genres have influenced me over the years and because of this I have become very versatile. This is easily heard in the songs that I write and when I perform.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like? How do you write?
Webster: I have a natural style of creativity. I sometimes think or dream up ideas and then I try to write them down or put them in my phone or on paper. Other times I hear or see something and I will just sit and write music or lyrics for hours.
Review Fix: What’s your favorite track on the upcoming EP, “Rize”?
Webster: I don’t have a favorite song on this album. I honestly like each song for different reasons. They each have their own twist and for that reason I don’t really have a favorite. Hopefully one will really start to become my favorite.
Review Fix: What have you learned about yourself through the recording of this album?
Webster: I’ve learned so much about myself, in the process of recording this album. I haven’t reached my full potential in regards to the technique in which the harmonies have been constructed, I don’t know that I will ever be there. However the style and pattern of how the music was written has been an amazing experience for me. I have much more to learn and I am enjoying every minute of it along the way.
Review Fix: What are your goals for the album?
Webster: No boundaries. I hope that it can go as far as my dreams were. That I can take what I have learned from the making of this album and use those experiences for what I need on the next one. Mostly, the main goal is that I hope one of the songs on the album will have the ability to connect with someone out there. That it is the one song that is replayed more than any other in their playlist.
Review Fix: Why should someone buy it?
Webster: They will love my music. My songs are fun and upbeat, they have a great sound to them and will take you from any mood to a great mood.
