Review Fix chats with legendary Irish singer Mary Black, who discusses her “The Last Call†tour, which will effectively be her last time performing on a regular basis. With 30 years of albums, tours and performances, Black is set to come to the United States one last time this fall, a fond farewell to her loyal American fan base.
Review Fix: How excited are you for this tour?
Mary Black: I’m delighted to be going back to the U.S. where it’s always been a pleasure to tour.
Review Fix: How important is touring in the United States for you?
Black: I have been touring in the U.S. since the early ‘80s and have built up a loyal fan base there. It’s very important for me to get back there for this last call tour.
Review Fix: What’s the difference in the crowds between the U.S. and Ireland?
Black: I find the U.S. audiences to be very warm and appreciative of the fact that we’ve travelled a long way to perform there.
Review Fix: How are your live shows different from your studio work?
Black: I enjoy live performance more than I ever did recording in the studio. I think this comes across in our performance and makes for a more exciting and enjoyable experience.
Review Fix: What do you pride yourself upon the most when it comes to your music?
Black: It’s important for me to have a strong connection with the audience and for them to feel the emotion of the songs I sing.
Review Fix: How important is it to you to be so highly esteemed in Ireland?
Black: It’s very important to any artist to be recognised in their own country. It all started in small folk clubs in Dublin and was a very gradual rise to the recognition I have today – this means an awful lot to me.
Review Fix: You’ve done so much in music, but are there any other things you’d like to do in the field?
Black: At the moment I’m concentrating on this Last Call Tour that will take me to many countries around the world over the next year – after that I’m not sure.
Review Fix: Who are a few artists that you love that people may not expect?
Black: I love Damian Dempsey, Jozier, Tony Bennett, Wallis Bird to name just a few.
Review Fix: What’s next for you after the tour?
Black: A well earned rest first and lots of time to enjoy my two granddaughters – after that we’ll see where the road takes me.
