Usagi Yojimbo: Senso #1 Preview: DBZ-Inspired

Stan Sakai’s “Usagi Yojimbo” has been a mainstay in comics for decades. Who would have thought a story about a rabbit samurai would be beloved by many? With the release of “Usagi Yojimbo: Senso” by Dark Horse the series will be celebrating its thirtieth anniversary. The early preview of issue one looks promising though a little iffy.

The story takes place twenty years in Usagi’s future where he’s fighting as a general for Lord Noriyuki against Lord Hikiji. During this battle a rocket crashes in the middle of the battlefield with a very powerful enemy.

The early preview just shows the beginning of the battle. The battle is classic “Usagi Yojimbo” pumped up to eleven with Usagi kicking much tail. The only thing missing is the cartoony souls that appear whenever somebody dies. This could be intentional because there is a chance Stan Sakai might be going for a serious tone with this comic. Sadly, serious is not something people expect from “Usagi Yojimbo.” It works better as a light hearted action novels with cute animals.

Now onto the plot. If you read that and thought ‘Dragonball Z,” you might be right. It does sound a whole lot the plot of every season of “Dragonball Z.” Of course, it’s too early to say how this plot will play out. However, Stan Sakai might surprise us with something that’s completely unsuspected and be a great thirtieth anniversary story. Though it could take the “Dragonball Z” knockoff route and anger many fans.

“Usagi Yojimbo: Senso #1” could be the thirtieth anniversary story fans want or it could end in tears. The plot sounds like a total ripoff, but there is that one slight chance it could turn out fine. Hope for the later.
