Review Fix Exclusive: Sara Minisquero Talks ‘Things That Go Bump in the Night’

Review Fix chats with “Things That Go Bump in the Night” Associate Producer Sara Minisquero, who discusses the production and its run at The Kraine Theater, 85 East 4th Street, NYC on Oct. 29 and 30 as well as her horror influences and goals for the show.

Review Fix: What was the inspiration for the production?

Sara Minisquero: Working with Scott (Director of The Greenhouse), we as a cast discussed popular sci-fi and horror movie tropes concerning the unwanted kidnapped kid, the bumbling criminals, and the secret monster in the room. We wanted to avoid cliches but really get the most out of a very exciting reveal. And where it sits in the lineup of the whole festival, it really is a bucket of cold water (or blood) for the audience.

Review Fix: What things have influenced your creativity in terms of horror over the course of your life?

Minisquero: I’ve always been immensely infatuated with the special fx makeup world. The transformations do really incredible things for character development, and that’s really inspiring for me as an actor to really break out of the expectations limited by my physical form. The bloody, mysterious and macabre make the stakes so much higher for any scene, and adds in this wonderfully addictive element of suspense- every heightened moment means so much more when death is on the line!

Review Fix: What makes your production different from the other ones featured?

Minisquero: The Greenhouse specifically is one of the more terrifying pieces in the lineup, and in part, one of the most indirectly scary. Offhand, you don’t fully know what element of the horror realm you’re dealing with until the very end. And, what makes the piece special for me is the use of Fx for my character; it enhances everything I’m doing, and in a way it’s been really liberating not caring about being adorable on stage because I’m too busy being horrifying.

Review Fix: How does it feel to be a part of the entire night?

Minisquero: This is such a cool experience. The horror genre is usually a cinematic experience, and to have a live audience to shock and scare is really fantastic.  This is my favorite time of year to break out of my shell and really push my own limits of belief.

Review Fix: Who do you think will enjoy this production the most?

Minisquero: The reactions! The screams! The nervous laughter. I think this fest is unique and the themes probably haven’t been prestented in this way before.

Review Fix: How do you want your show to be remembered?

Minisquero: As long as the comic timing is on point, I think our show might be one of the funniest and one of the most shocking. I’m giddy because I think I lucked out with one of the stand-out characters of the night. I couldn’t be more pleased.

Review Fix: What are your ultimate goals for your show?

Minisquero: To put on a memorable night! Kickstart the halloween holiday for a lot of people and get people talking again about what can be done on stage that typically doesn’t get done. It’ll be nice to get approval from the die-hard horror movie buffs.
