Dead Island #1 Preview: Pretty Damn Cool

“Dead Island” is one of the biggest video game franchises in recent years. The story of zombies attacking a tropical paradise became a massive hit practically overnight. So the obvious course of action would be to make a comic book spinoff. “Deep Silver” has partnered itself with “Dark Horse” to make a three issue, 48 page comic written by Alex de Campi with art by Mike Hawthorne (Penciller) John Lucas (Inker) and Michael Atiyeh (Colorist.)

The story is, according to ‘Dark Horse,” about two friends, Richard and Marco, living a normal life in California. Then the zombies come and the two friends take this as a golden opportunity to be heroes.

The story sounds like a “Beavis and Butt-head” fanfic where the two idiots see zombies and go “cool, zombies! Let’s kick their asses. Uh huh huh huh.” “Yeah. Heh heh hmm hmm.” This may not have been de Campi’s intent, but that is what it sounds like.

The preview pages go right the point: One of the characters gets attacked by a neighbor who was turned into a zombie. That’s it. That is also all you really need to know about this comic’s story.

The positive thing about the art is that it’s colorful. Atiyeh went all out with the color and it looks nice. The drawings on the other hand are more along the lines of passable. The character design is nice looking for what it is as are the crows. The zombie is the best drawn thing in the entire comic as it should because we’ll most likely see tons of them in this comic.

The “Dead Island” comic’s story may have a “Beavis and Butt-head” vibe to it, but that remains to be seen in the final product. The art style is passable, but it redeems itself by being colorful. This comic has a lot to live up to if it wants to please “Dead Island” fans.
