Lords of the Fallen isn’t exactly the next-generation hardcore action role-playing game it was amped up to be… but it’s close. Difficulty and character progression run at separate paces, and the painfully frustrating gameplay present in the beginning of the campaign soon fades into a faster, less painful hack-and-slash.
The further you progress through Lords of the Fallen’s roughly 18-hour campaign, the fewer punishing moments the game throws at you. Its steepening difficulty reaches its limits a little too early, allowing players to get comfortable after reaching a certain point. In fact, deaths in the second half of the campaign, rather than serving as learning experiences, become more of an annoyance.
Players assume the role of Harkyn, a badass dude who was freed from imprisonment to prevent inter-dimensional demons from destroying the world. He, alongside his mentor, Kaslo, sets off to save the human realm in hopes of having his sins forgiven.
