Review Fix Exclusive: Deny Yang Talks ‘The Gazillion Bubble Show’

Review Fix chats with the star of “The Gazillion Bubble Show,” who discusses the production getting to 3,000 shows, as well as what the future holds. An off-Broadway fixture for years, Yang breaks down what has made the production so successful. Currently offering an updated holiday schedule at New World Stages, there hasn’t been a better time to see the show.

Review Fix: How does it feel to get to 3,000 performances?

Deni Yang: Getting to 3000 performances is an amazing feat for any show on or Off-Broadway, so we are fortunate to have tapped into an international audience that appreciates the family entertainment we deliver.

It’s funny when you look back at our beginnings in the US, up until eight years ago we were touring all over Asia and Europe, then we had an opportunity to perform our show nine times in front of an audience of American presenters. That short, temporary run kept extending and extending and now we are well over 3000 shows, that’s a lot of bubbles.

Review Fix: How do you think the show has grown since its initial performance?

Yang: The Gazillion Bubble Show has grown immensely since we started, for one thing my sister Melody and I have taken over performing in New York, we were both four years old when we started performing with bubbles, now we get to take center stage in NYC. The show has really developed, due to updated technology and always improving our bubble formulas, we can do more elaborate bubble tricks. We have higher production values and have incorporated amazing technical elements, like a new and improved one of a kind laser light show.  So if you saw the show a few years ago, you will be amazed by how different it is today.

Review Fix: What do you think makes this show so special?

Yang: I think there are a few things that make this show special, first off is that bubble are truly the first magic everyone come in contact with as a child. That wonderment and amazement never goes away, but it can easily be boring. We take that childhood amazement and blow it up into spectacle, with smoke, lasers, lights and music. We make square bubbles, rotating bubbles, we put bubbles in bubbles, and we even put kids in bubbles.

Review Fix: Why do you think someone who hasn’t seen it, should?

Yang: You cannot say the works “bubble” without smiling.  It brings children of all ages to that happy place where you can see a rainbow float in every bubble. It’s fantastic to watch kids smile and reach to pop a bubble that is right before them, but it’s even better to see a parent or grandparent play.

Review Fix: How do you keep the show fresh after being performed for so long?

Yang: In addition to always looking for ways to improve the show or update a trick, we also have very finicky co-stars, the bubbles and kids.  It’s sometimes hard to make both do what you need them to do and that keeps us on our toes and make for a great show.

Review Fix: Why do you think bubbles are so cool?

Yang: A little water and some soap combine to create simple but fantastic works of art. Understanding what makes the bubbles work allows us to do some amazing things with the materials we have, sometimes on purpose and sometimes as a fantastic mistake. But everyone loves and can relates to watching a bubble float high in the air and when we can return, even for a brief moment, to our childhood, to me that is the coolest thing ever.  I am very lucky to travel the world, and bring our brand of bubble artistry to people of all ages.

Review Fix: How would you like this holiday season run to be remembered?

Yang: As far as the Gazillion Bubble Show, I want this holiday season to be remembers as the season of a Gazillion smiles.
