Review Fix Exclusive: Hailey Rowe Discusses ‘My Boyfriend is Gay’ and More

Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter Hailey Rowe, who discusses her last two singles, “My Boyfriend is Gay” and “Don’t Need Your Approval,” as well as her future in the industry. An admirer of several different musical genres, her appreciation for all music is what sets her apart from force competition on the pop charts.

Review Fix: What makes you different from other singers?

Hailey Rowe: I have a great appreciation for all genres of music.  Performing in a cover band and as a solo artist, I’ve learned so much about country, rock, pop, electronic, jazz, and classical music.

Review Fix: Who inspires you vocally?

Rowe: Vocally, I can’t get enough of Shakira, Michael Bublé, & Lana Del Rey. Their voices are so unique! Performance-wise, I will never stop loving Madonna. She certainly knows how to entertain.

Review Fix: What do you think you have to do more of to be as successful as you want to be in the music industry?

Rowe: I’m very happy with my music career and enjoy performing and recording as much as possible. However, as a full-time college student, I don’t write and work on my music as much as I should. You know what they say, “The greater the risk, the greater the reward.” To be more successful, I think I need to put more time in and be willing to take bigger artistic risks.

Review Fix: What’s the story behind “Don’t Need Your Approval”? How was it written?

Rowe: It was inspired by the idea that we allow so many outside factors control our decisions and happiness. It is really important to me to know that I lived a life that was meaningful and true to myself, not a life that was designed just to please others or follow society’s standards.

Review Fix: What inspired “My Boyfriend is Gay”?

Rowe: Everyone is disappointed to learn that nothing in particular inspired this song (Sorry!). I didn’t have a gay boyfriend… However, I thought it would be a great concept for a pop song because I’ve known a few ladies who have dated men who later come out as gay. I asked my gay friends for their thoughts on the idea, and the song took on a life of its own!

Review Fix: What was the set of the video like?

Rowe: Shooting day was very chaotic because we had a deadline to finish the entire video in one day (filming at several locations). But it was one of the most fun days of my life! I am extremely lucky to have a supportive group of friends and family who were a part of the video. I love every cast & crew member; I still keep in touch with many of them today.

Review Fix: Who do you want to affect the most with your music?

Rowe: I hope to influence youngsters to follow their truth and be ambitious. It takes a lot of courage to be vulnerable and expose your art/passion to the world, but it is so worth it.

Review Fix: What’s next for you?

Rowe: I am studying business entrepreneurship right now in college. I am going to keep performing and enjoying my work as a singer/songwriter and fitness professional. When the time is right, I’d love to put together a Lana Del Rey or Madonna tribute show.
