A handful of solid wrestling action and the set up for a slew of great matches next week wasn’t enough to make this week’s episode of NXT anything more than average.
While this wasn’t a terrible show, the announcement of several awesome matches next week including Bull Dempsey and Baron Corbin, as well as Finn Balor and Tyson Kidd, made us eager to fast forward time to see where that drama goes.
But not for anything that occurred here. Take nothing away from the cool Tag Team title main event, but, for the most part, the entire show lacked storyline development and featured standard matches with predictable finishes. Unlike the NXT shows of the past, this lacked a sense of urgency and passion. With TNA Impact now on Wednesday as well, NXT is going to have to step up its game even more.
Matches:
Curtis Axel vs. Hideo Itami: Axel was tough on Itami, pounding him with strikes throughout the match, but after a counter of the Perfect Plex, Itami got the win with the Spinning Wheel kick on the seated Axel.
Sasha Banks w/Jessica Lynch vs. Alexa Bliss: Banks was in control throughout and got the win without much fanfare thanks to the Bank Statement combination.
Tyler Breeze vs. Chad Gable: Weird, Gable was in control throughout the match, but Breeze got the sudden win thanks to the Beauty Shot.
NXT Tag Team Champions Sin Cara and Kalisto vs. Aiden English and Simon Gotch: Kalisto sold the entire match until Sin Cara got tagged in and went on a tear, hitting the Sunset Bomb for a near-fall, but Gotch and English, who were utilizing quick tags throughout were a step ahead. But after a Top-Rope Spinning Clothesline/Powerbomb combination from The Lucha Dragons, they were able to put English away.
