Rat God #1 Preview: Surprisingly Mediocre

Richard Corben has made a name for himself in recent years as one of the masters of comic book horror. One of his newest entries is “Rat God,” which will become available February 4th. Sadly, the preview pages make his newest entry seem so ordinary.

During his graduate studies Clark Elwood met a strange girl who he instantly fell for. Years later he decided to look for in the backwoods where he comes face to face to some of the worst horrors he’s ever seen.

The story sounds like the typical man finds strange woman, he goes looking for her only to find that everything about her is out of a horror movie. Of course, Richard Corben has a history of surprising people so he just might make the final product something unexpected and enjoying. Also, there is a high chance he will add his usua blend of off the wall scares.

The art looks like it’s classic Corben, though there do appear to be some rough spots. The design of the girl looks way too awkward to be enjoyable. The comic does say she looks weird, so it just might be that. Also, some of the backgrounds look very minimalistic and not very appealing. It’s as if Corben put them in as an afterthought.

“Rat God” sounds like a cliché story, but Corben may do something that will blow our minds. The art may be off, but again this is an early preview. The final product has to stand up to the standards that Corben created in order for it to be likable.
