Review Fix chats with Viceroy Crux’s Terry Stirling Jr. who discusses the band’s upcoming music video “Another Sunrise.†Breaking down the creative experience behind the song as well, Sterling Jr. also chats what the set of the video was like- an experience quite different than what most band’s experience when shooting a video.
If you’re unfamiliar with the band, their recently released EP, “Round Dice,†is a solid combination of high-energy rock anthems and catchy ballads.
Review Fix: How was the song written?
Terry Stirling Jr.: Another Sunrise was the second song written on Round Dice. I had an idea for drums and I based the guitar part around that. I demoed on my home studio and I was excited to track it and for us to play it live. It’s always a fun song to play live.
Review Fix: Was there any direct influence for the song, or a story behind it?
Stirling Jr.: The lyrics started while I was watching the sunrise after a tough night. The theme for “Another Sunrise†is resilience. If things don’t go as planned today, you have tomorrow to make the changes to push forward. Everyone has the ability to recover and jump back into the fight. I feel those thoughts need to be reinforced. Maybe this is a song to remind myself to keep forging forward during the vulnerable times.
Review Fix: The video is totally old-school 90s. Is that what you were going for?
Stirling Jr.: No, that’s not what we were going for. We just wanted a performance-based music video that captured the same energy we feel when we play it live.
Review Fix: What was the mood like on set?
Stirling Jr.: Everyone that was there worked very hard. But, we also fiesta’d hard. We started shooting as soon as it got dark. The mood was pretty laid back. We’d do a couple takes, then we would jam and have a couple beers. Then we’d do a couple more takes, then jam again and have a couple more beers. We did a full take where the gorgeous ladies (girlfriends/friends) put on the guitars and jumped on the kit and it was awesome. By the time the anthem at the end of the song came, everyone who was there jumped in front of the camera and finished off the song. So much fun. It was also my little brother’s 18th birthday so he brought like 8 of his friends and we played the Beatles’ birthday song followed by a short set before getting back to shooting. We didn’t leave the warehouse till the sun came up the next morning.
Review Fix: Who do you think will dig it most?
Stirling Jr.: Every single person that watches will hate it. Joking. Honestly, I think our closest friends and family will dig it most since you can see us all toward the end having a good time and spreading the love. Our best friends, siblings, and girlfriends are all there.
Review Fix: What was your favorite part of the video?
Stirling Jr.: This is the greatest story ever. Hands down, my favorite part of the video is during the bridge/solo when Tim’s gettin’ down in one of the trailer shots. We were hanging at home a few days after the video was shot drinking wine and listening to ACDC, country, and Disney soundtracks. Ryan says, “Yo, I’m playing ‘My Heart Will Go On’ right the F**k now.” So, there we were. Grown. Rocking out to Celine Dion. I thought it would be a good idea to sync up the footage of Tim chanting the ‘woahs’ part with Celine Dione turned all the way up. We filmed the screen and watched that like 100 times over the next week. Now, anytime we see our music video, we think of that experience. Tim, Celine Dion, rocking out.
Review Fix: How do you want it to be remembered?
Stirling Jr.: It’s totally up to the viewer. We’ll remember it as a great night with best friends.
