Review Fix Exclusive: Baha Men’s Dyson Knight Talks ‘Ride With Me’

Review Fix chats with the Baha Men’s Dyson Knight, who discusses the band’s new album, “Ride With Me,” as well as the band’s goals for the future. 10 years since their last album, Knight talks about the affect “Who Let the Dogs Out” had on the band and how through it all, the band always stuck together.

Review Fix: How does it feel to have a new album out?

Dyson Knight: The band is excited about the new material and the fact that the label believes in this project. We’re expecting a lot from this album but we know that there’s a lot of ground to cover in reintroducing the band to the world. Fortunately, we’ve been here before and we know we have what it’s going to take to see the success of previous albums.

Review Fix: What was the creative process like?

Knight: The creative process was quite smooth once we locked in a formula that suited our producer. Once he understood the vibe, sound and deep talent of the band we were able to produce a number of songs for A&R to choose from.

Review Fix: How does it feel to have a huge song like “Who Let the Dogs Out”? Is it something you guys enjoy, or is it stifling considering you guys are still around and working hard to produce new music?

Knight: “Who Let the Dogs out” is a blessing and we appreciate it as such. We have had some ups and downs due to the EPIC success of the song but being back on the scene now, signed by a major label and releasing a new album is testament to the journey being worth while. Hits as big as “Dogs” are distracting in a sense as everyones trying to squeeze in and see what they can squeeze out. It also pulled us away from markets that we were quite popular in  but, the future is bright.

Review Fix: Who do you think will enjoy this album the most?

Knight: My daughter loves the track “Carry On.” She can’t wait to share the song with her friends at school so I’d say that particular song will do well with ages 12 and under. The other songs will hit home with party goers and there’s a song with a beautiful chill factor that will sit well with people of the same vibe. The album is pretty well rounded.

Review Fix: How was “Night & Day” written? Is there a story behind it?

Knight: “Night and Day” was one of the first songs we completed for the album. It’s the song that pretty much solidified our chemistry with our producer and A&R. We wrote two totally different songs to this track before finally getting to the one you hear today.

Review Fix: What did you guys learn about yourself through the production of this album?

Knight: We’ve been together for years- There’s not much we didn’t know about each other. We know who snores and who slacks off and who goes missing every time a beautiful woman comes along.

Review Fix: How do you want this album to be remembered?

Knight: I want this album to be remembered as the answer to “who let the dogs” in the sense that the band is capable of repeating that level of product and success.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Knight: Next, we wait to see how the world receives us and the new “Ride With Me” album. In the meantime, we’ll continue to build off our performances of the new material and perform our butts off at every show to come.
