Review Fix chats with “Satanic Hell” creator Grigoris Douros, who discusses the third issue of the series series and its recent partnership with Alterna Comics.
“Red State” meets “Metalocalypse,” this comic will induce a laugh or two, but it will make you think as well.
The seven-issues series comes out bi-monthly on Comixology, from Alterna Comics. You can find it at SatanicHell.com.
Review Fix: For those who haven’t read any of the series yet, what is the comic about?
Grigoris Douros: Satanic Hell is about a struggling metal band that gets their last chance at success with a tour in a Texas taken over by religious fundamentalists. The Christian mullahs that run Texas target the metal band as an extreme threat to their holy state. In order for the band to achieve their dream they’ll have to survive their own personal hell-on-earth. It’s a satirical epic that takes the “War on Satan†to a climax. Think of it as “Persopolis meets V for Vendetta.â€
Review Fix: What makes issue three special?
Douros: Guitars, God, blood and rats– this issue has got it all! After a rough entry, Death Priest, Dante, and Exodus have been bringing their mayhem to the land of the Christian Taliban. In issue three, things heat up for Satanic Hell as Reverend Scudder makes his move against the metal band and tensions rise between them. In the midst of all this, Sam, their tour manager, introduces a twist to the tour. Now the band members must decide: should we stay or should we go now? Plus, there’s a beautiful two-page opening spread done by artists Kevin Enhart and Jimmy Kerast.
Review Fix: What changes have been made for the Alterna release?
Douros: It’s hard for writers to let go and say a work is finished. So when I had the chance to improve it for the new release, I couldn’t resist strengthening some of the dialog. It’s a fantastic issue that takes the story to 11.
Review Fix: How have they helped better the series?
Douros: On Alterna Comics, Satanic Hell gets better promotion and distribution. It’s a great, creator-friendly comic book publisher.
Review Fix: Bottom line, why should someone check out the series?
Douros: If you’re a fan of dystopian fiction, satire, or metal/rock music, then this series is for you. Satanic Hell is a gripping story with fun characters that comes to life with Kevin Enhart’s gritty art and Jimmy Kerast’s haunting colors.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Douros: Death Priest, Exodus, and Dante all have their own motivations for doing the tour and it’s unclear if the tour will conclude before they break up or are destroyed. Revered Scudder is convinced Satanic Hell has been sent by the Devil himself and so he brings in some “divine†intervention to put an end to the metal band. The question remains: Can three guys in a metal band survive, let alone change, Texas?
