Hell’s Kitchen Recap: Goin’ Greek’

It’s a Greek celebration with broken plates and all in a new episode of “Hell’s Kitchen.” Not to mention a Red Team so weak that not even Zeus himself can save them.

The day’s challenge was another culture themed one. This time that culture was Greek with Greek dancers to drive home the point. There were also six domes, each with a protein used in Greek cooking. Each chef paired up against another chef on the opposite team to cook head to head with. The chefs were Josh VS Alison (lamb,) Michelle VS Bret (prawns,) Milly VS Meghan (squid,) Randy VS T (chicken,) Sarah VS Nick (swordfish) and Adam VS Christine (pork.)

Of course, the chefs had one more thing to do before they started cooking. They had to do another Greek tradition: break plates to get their ingredients. Now, if you tell a bunch of people on the brink of losing it to break plates they will have the time of their lives. That is exactly what happened here with glass flying all over the place. Good thing they were wearing safety goggles.

At tasting the guest judge was the chef/owner of “Kefi” Michael Psilakis. The dishes were rated on a scale from 1-5 stars. The worst dish belonged to Josh for the simple fact that his lamb did not sit and there was blood all over the dish. One star from both judges.

The Blue won 41-40. Their reward was go-karting a “K1 Speed” with Miss California USA 2013 Mabelynn Capeluj. Josh thought Miss California was his lucky charm, but instead she became his distraction, causing him to come in third. That’s what happens when you get distracted in the go-kart range.

The Red spent the day cleaning up the glass and prepping both kitchens. Sarah didn’t get any help from her teammates when she asked where the outlets were. Yes, outlets are usually on the pillars of restaurants like this, but her team could’ve helped her a little instead of ignoring her.

Before dinner, Ramsay had a heart to heart talk with Milly about not getting himself down whenever he loses a challenge. That’s sound advice which did help that night. Too bad the same can’t be said for the Red.

On the Red team, Alison decided to start making mistakes by bringing up cold lobster tail. On top of that, her next lobster came out discolored because she burned the butter used to cook the lobster. The butter looked like caramel! At least she admitted it was a stupid mistake. At entrees, Christine had trouble with garnish. Her eggplant was undercooked and burnt rice. Sarah would then cook undercooked Wellington and overcooked lamb. She would then a rookie mistake by cutting a raw lamb. If a meat is still raw you stop cutting it. T even had to tell her this obvious fact. This also caused Ramsay to throw the entire team out.

On the Blue team, appetizers went by smoothly. Things didn’t pan out so well come entrees. Randy put up mashed potatoes that were like soup because somebody put cream in them. He did not know who did it, and Ramsay asked everyone. Nobody owed up to it. It’s understandable that Ramsay got mad at this. This is when he starts punishing the entire team for one person’s mistake. He didn’t do it here, though. He did have an issue with Milly improperly cutting a Wellington. Adam would then make two branzino with way too much oil. It was obvious that they were swimming in it. They did finish dinner service and had to finish the Red Team’s tables.

The Red Team really crashed and burned this episode. They had to choose two people for elimination. They chose Sarah and Christine with Sarah getting the boot.

The Red’s dreadful service should not come as a surprise to anyone. This is about the right time in this series when a team crashes and burns while the other team does well. This season it’s the Red. Next week’s preview is promised to be “star-studded.” That’s just a clever way of saying there will be chef tables. We all know the joy of those episodes.
