Jesus Rocks Review: Rickin’ With the J-Man

The New Testament is the foundation of a religion that has over 1.8 billion followers worldwide. People are so familiar with this story that they can tell it in their sleep. Comic artist Brao Barbosa turned this story into a comic called “Jesus Rocks” and it is awesome.

The story is about a nameless metal head, who the other nameless character calls “dad,” telling the story of Jesus’s life as if he was a rock icon. He tells of his band and how he influenced every rock and roll/metal band in existence.

This is one of the most original retellings of a biblical story. “Dad,” tells this story like it was how a real band came about. Some of these include the twelve disciples as band members and Jesus teaching the greats like Frank Zappa how to play. There’s even that famous Jesus destroying a tax collector’s table, only this time it’s a scalper’s table.

Of course, some people will take offense to making Jesus a band leader. Though once you analyze this person, his story is essentially like a lot of famous rock and roll/ metal legends. Guys like Elvis Presley, Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, Lemmy Kilmister and Ozzy Osbourne are like gods to many people. Making Jesus a band leader makes sense.

The art isn’t anything all that great. It is a basic black and white comic-style that looks like it’d be more at home in the Sunday newspaper. Nothing about it stands out, nor anything that makes it an eye sore. It’s all around “meh.”

Brao Barbosa offers up a bowl of awesome and “why not?” with “Jesus Rocks.” It’s the story of Jesus told like is your classic rock and roll icon tale. The art may not be all that grand, but this comic is still worth a look at especially if you have accepted Elvis or Ozzy as your lord and savior.
