Review Fix chats with Toad The Wet Sprocket frontman Glen Phillips, who discusses the band’s new tour with Tonic and Smash Mouth as well as the band’s future and the inspiration behind one of the band’s biggest hits.
Review Fix: How does it feel to tour with Smash Mouth and Tonic?
Glen Phillips: It stings a little at first, but then it begins to tingle and slowly resolves into a comforting, warm sensation.
Review Fix: How did the band’s time apart change your creative process?
Phillips: It was a great opportunity to grow as a writer and performer, to work with new people and take on new challenges.
Review Fix: I’ve always wanted to ask, what’s the story behind “All I Want”? What inspired it?
Phillips: It’s about the fleeting nature of epiphany, kind of.
Review Fix: Considering all you’ve accomplished, what else do you guys really want to accomplish in music?
Phillips: I have a number of projects I’d like to take on. For me it’s about variety and creativity these days. At some point I’d like to be able to be on the road less and at home more, but that’s probably a few years off still. More writing, more collaboration, and not letting the demands of the nostalgiacs overshadow current creativity.
Review Fix: What are your main goals for this tour?
Phillips: To play some good music, see some good sights.
Review Fix: What’s next for you guys?
Phillips: I’m recording another solo record in June, doing some solo touring, songwriting workshops and instruction, and joining some Canadian friends with the Art of Time ensemble in November doing modern orchestral arrangements of Sgt. Peppers. No Toad plans at the moment beyond occasional touring.
