Review Fix: What was the inspiration for this game?
Andrew Gilmour: Well, I wanted to make a game that was simple, challenging, fun, and more like the games I played growing up.
Review Fix: What games did you play as a kid and how did they influence this one?
Gilmour: I would say every game I have played is an influence on Slain! Most prominent are Ghost ‘n Goblins, Gauntlet, Barbarian, Golden Axe, Dungeon Master, Eye of the Beholder, Streets of Rage, Diablo, Doom, and Quake. I’d like to think you can find the spirit of these games in Slain! Of course it is its own beast now.
Review Fix: What has the development process been like?
Gilmour: This has been one of my best game-making experiences, being an indie developer suits me very well.
Review Fix: Any particular hurdles?
Gilmour: Working alone and self motivation. Luckily the internet has provided a solution. The Gaming Community has been unbelievably supportive online and through Twitter. It keeps me motivated and provides valued feedback.
Review Fix: What’s the story behind the game?
Gilmour: There is a pretty good background and story, but you will have to play the game to experience it. The basic premise is to destroy or liberate seven towers.
Review Fix: The soundtrack for the game is beautiful. Who did it and how did you get involved with them?
Gilmour: We were fortunate enough to have Caglar Sahin contact us early on in the project. He composed all our initial music for demos and trailers. We will be having some big news in this area very soon.
Review Fix: Will the game play differently on different consoles?
Gilmour: The core gameplay will remain the same, but I believe if you are spending time porting it over to another system you should take the time and tweak it to cater for that system.
Review Fix: Can you tell us a bit more about the Horde Mode?
Gilmour: There will be a lot of monsters, and only one of you.
Review Fix:Â Aside from looking awesome, what else makes the Blood Sword cool?
Gilmour: No, there is no apparent difference between the Bloodsword and the base sword, however there is some evidence that certain demons are attracted to it.
Review Fix: Was it difficult to develop on the Ouya?
Gilmour: We are still in the process, but so far so good.
Review Fix: What are your goals for the game?
Gilmour: We wanted to make a game that we would enjoy playing, combining old-school gameplay, metal music, and Gothic art into a retro gore-fest that others could also enjoy.
Review Fix: Could this be a series?
Gilmour: It very well may be.
Review Fix: What’s the next few months look like?
Gilmour: Time is all blurry. What’s a month again?
