Ring of Honor proved itself in the ring yet again this past week with three solid matches, but with a lack of storyline development and no Jay Lethal or Jay Briscoe following Best in the World, or even the mention of what happened during their match, Ring of Honor feels like a dated wrestling show, stuck in the mid-90s PPV era.
Again, it’s great in the ring and if you watch it for the love of the “sport,†you won’t be disappointed, but with Lucha Underground, TNA and WWE doing so much more away from the in-ring action, it’s hard to get a casual wrestling audience to watch this show. If ROH can survive on their dedicated fan base, then who cares, but wasn’t the main reason for going to Destination America in the first place was to build the brand?
At this point, it feels like ROH needs a shakeup in storyline or at least better planning of their cards.
Matches:
Roderick Strong vs. Shinsuke Nakamura: An excellent back and forth that saw Strong use his variation of Backbreakers while Nakamura used knees and submissions. Strong nearly got the win with his Brainbuster/Backbreaker combo and then kicked out of a massive Nakamura Knee at one, but after another crazy Knee to the face, Nakamura got the win.
Gedo vs. Michael Elgin: Gedo got in some offense, but Elgin got the win with the Turnbuckle Powerbomb, followed by a Sit-out Powerbomb.
IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions The Young Bucks, Matt and Matt Jackson and IWGP Champion AJ Styles w/ Doc Gallows and Karl Anderson vs. Okada and Roppongi Vice, Rocky Romero and Trent Barretta: A high-energy match with plenty of offense, counters and near-falls. After the Bucks and Roppongi Vice took themselves out of the match with some wild high-flying moves both in and out of the ring, Styles hit a wonderful Brainbuster, but Okada hit the Tombstone Piledriver. Styles got the Bucks back into the match. After the Turnbuckle Powerbomb, Enzigieri, the bucks followed up with a Leg Drop, but they couldn’t put Romero away. After Barretta hit the top ropGerman, Styles got back in the match and after a pair of Super Kicks from Matt Jackson and more offense, the match was still deadlocked. After six more Super Kicks, Styles and the Bucks beat Barretta with two Tombstones and The Styles Clash.
